Why Massive/Ubisoft needs to make Year One content free for everyone.

First let me explain my position: I love this game. I have 300+ hours in this game and I've completely maxed out my main character with a godroll shield-tank build. This pretty much gives me no more reason to grind missions or extract items from the dark zone. Because I already have the best there is. I have finished playing the unlock simulator part of the Division.

The activities that are left for me to do are: Going Rogue in the DZ, Playing Survival and Playing Last Stand. And I enjoy them very very much. It is the dopamine kick of emerging victorious out of the fight, that keeps me coming back to this game, whether I survive a long Manhunt in the DZ, be the first to reach the helicopter in Survival or carrying my team to victory in Last Stand. I love it.

The gameplay experience of the Division really consists of 3 parts:

    1. Playing through the story, this part end when you finish the last mission.
    2. Grinding to get better Gear (the Unlock Simulator) by replaying missions and HVT’s, playing underground and farming in the DZ, this part pretty much ends when you reach maximum gear score and have the best rolls on your gear.
    3. The real endgame: Playing Survival, Last Stand and Going Rogue in the Dark Zone, this can go on forever. For Survival and Last Stand you need the season pass.

I believe that in order to keep this games player population alive, Ubisoft and Massive need to make the Year 1 content free for everyone. Just like Ubisoft did for Rainbow Six Siege.

Many people who don’t own the season pass stopped playing the game after they finished the story, because they simply don’t have the patience or the time to grind for better gear. And many casual players who for example try out the game during a free weekend never get to experience the amazing thrill of Survival and Last Stand. They can only try to experience the thrill of surviving a man hunt. And most of the time not even that, because their gear isn’t good enough.

When Ubisoft and Massive make all year 1 content free, more players will play and keep playing the game. This is beneficial for everyone:

    • It is beneficial for existing players because a larger player base should mean having an easier time finding players in matchmaking.
    • It is beneficial for new players because they can experience the full endgame.
    • It is beneficial for Ubisoft, because more players means more sales of micro-transactions.

When Ubisoft and Massive make all year 1 content free, they can also focus on expanding Last Stand and Survival by adding new gameplay elements, gamemodes and areas to play in. Like for example a basic team-deathmatch mode in a small arena in DZ9 or capture the flag. Or add new gameplay elements to Survival like a blackout mode in which New York is plummeted into darkness after an EMP and the players HUD and gadgets don’t work. So they have to rely purely on their map knowledge and gun-skills. They could also create some standard gearsets for lower level player to use/borrow in Last Stand so they don't have to do the entire grind to be able to stand a chance in Last Stand.

These are just some ideas and just a taste of what Massive and Ubisoft could do and create if all year one content was free for everyone. Remember: if more people play and keep playing the Division, the more micro-transactions Ubisoft can sell, and the more money Ubisoft makes.

TL;DR: Making Year 1 content free for everyone makes players stay longer and makes the game more fun for new/casual players.

I can't see them doing that, it would be great if they did though. A highly discounted dlc could also help.

yes; game should be free if only on the basis it must be the most boring unrealsitic grinding tedium of constantly wading through all teh apendages and crap.
i go hunting for meat to eat and i do target shooting at many ranges and particularly enjoy long range to 2km.
I am a very very good shot in meat world and never ever shoot anything for meat unless i am certain of a humane one-shot kill. I butcher in the field and waste nothing.
I am all too aware of how devastating even small firearms are and see no reflection of this in The Division which is a complete farce of a game; and yes it is as all things Ubisoft, rotten with cheats and hackers and those iniquitous unrepresentative leaderboards.
Goodbye Ubisoft; enough is enough. I for one will not play your garbage even if it is free in future.....
