"Standing in cover" posture needs to change in order to improve the cover system

As someone who uses the cover system a lot in GRW i noticed There has been an improvement to the way the cover system works in update 3.5. mostly the leaning ability (right or left).
now the angle of the crosshair also determines if you can lean or not. this means that you can stand near the edge of cover and not get the right\left arrow which tells you you could lean to the side, but if you are close enough to the edge than moving the camera to align the crosshair slightly farther out of cover can allow you to lean without moving your feet.
this is a bit better than how it was before but i havent tested this too thoroughly to judge honestly.

But the cover system can improve a little farther IMO by doing two things:

    1) the standing posture in this game is silly. the character is leaning forward with his shoulders and head as if he WANTS to get his head blown up. its like he is standing 1 foot from from the corner but sticks his head forward enough to allow a nice clean headshot. if it was possible to straighten him up this would have been super helpful. especially when the PVP comes out.

    2) maybe, and im talking again about the standing posture mostly, its possible to move the camera just a bit farther from the character so the crosshair can stick out of cover a bit more and allow us to stand upright a bit farther form the edge of the wall and still lean. it works better when crouching so why not when upright? this could replace suggestion no.1 if tweaking the animation is too much work :\

over all i find the cover system very useful and the leaning - real nice. i wish i will be able to use this in the PVP modes but as the cover system stands now - its a little bit finicky and could be farther tweaked as i suggested here before
    http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php...t=cover+system

when using it in 3rd person aiming its more helful than in first and i tend to stick to cover (stand close to the wall) then aim in 3rd person at the wall and then slowly move towards the edge. this works pretty well as i can clearly see when im leaning, but i wish i didnt need to do that and one of the two suggestions above was implemented.

hope you're listening UBI. it seems like you are improving the game in the tiny details as the updates come by and i, for once, really appreciate the tweaks.

So basically you want new animations when the player is going into a cover to be less exposed by shots? This is not a world with fake cover walls that have the same heights every time so you can always be safe because the environment is more natural but some animation tweaks could have been handy for those who likes cover system I guess.
    My two cents.
I would like to turn off/on cover system entirely, and perhaps an ability to lean everywhere? That's my wishful thinking. I'm not a fan of cover system at any form, it feels out of place to me in GR: Wildlands.

i wouldnt call it a new animation but rather a different stand idle. instead of hunching forward he should stand straight. there is no reason to stand with your face sticking forward towards the corner you are about to get shot from.

either that or move the camera like half a foot to the side when standing behind cover, like it is in every cover based game.
and the environment in the areas where 99% of the fighting takes place is not less or more natural than any other game. just the same. games these days no longer look like objects of the same size for you to take cover behind. they all look natural enough. they simply look like fire fight arenas so you will have an interesting place to shoot through.

    Okay.

Btw. name me a few games that have cover system (without or with cover to cover) at any form without fake obstacles with the same high. I am insteresting to hear if there is any.

If there is a cover system from the beginning of development devs must design objects to fit cover system objects which means maps look like paintball courses instead of natural invironments: The Division, Future Soldier, you name it. Ghost Recon Wildlands was design without cover system in mind that is why maps feels more natural from the beginning. If you take a look closely to first appearance E3 trailer for GR: Widlands you will see there is no cover system just yet but it was added later by community or for some other reasons. So yeah, this game needs "no cover" option and lean everywhere to support this feature completely.

i think the division has the most realistic and natural environment in any game to date.
    same as GTAIV or GTAV.
and the division doesnt have a paintball environment any more than GRW. GRW has a lot of cover as well. a lot of boxes, crates and concrete walls just the right height so you can crouch behind.
however, GRW has some even lower obstacles that you can hide behind when crouched. that's not due to the lack of cover system from the get go. it's because in GRW you can prone as well.
but looking at the encampments in GRW and it looks like any other 3rd person environment - a lot of cover in various sizes and a lot of chest high obstacles.
its not a bad thing. every shooter game, in first or 3rd person, needs to provide cover for standing upright or crouched, to make for an interesting firefight environment. this is true to battlefield or COD or FarCry as well. it has nothing to do with the cover system.
linear games tend to look more like a paintball field because there is a scripted way in which firefights occur and the directions of engagements are pre-determined, but in open world games the orientation and sizes of cover needs to be more organic.

    No, I disagree.
Try to play the Division or Future Soldier without stick to the cover mechanic and you will emideately change your mind what i meant by natural environment in video games - It's clunky and unplayable because your head is constantly popping out behind any obstacle with the same height - It is because maps are designed with cover system first and foremost so your character is always hiding only if sticking to the cover system.

GR: Wildlands does not have that problem but unfortunatelly the basic gameplay is still more video gamey (due to RPG BS weird design) than realistic...

    that isnt exactly true.
In the the division you cant crouch so duh. obviously you cant hide without the cover system behind low obstacles.
In GR:FS the crouching posture isnt low enough perhaps but when stuck to cover the posture is different. in FPSs the covers are designed to be tall enough to hide behind without your head sticking out. so why is that? because theres a cover system? its just the design of the objects. just like any game. its not about the cover system.
however, in older cover based games, like GR:FS, the cover system was made using cover nodes - the devs placed nodes where you are supposed to grab cover and if they forgot an object - then you couldnt attach to it. nowadays the cover systems are mostly systemic and collision based (no dev team can hand place nodes in huge environments like open world games), so objects can have more natural sizes and shapes. sometimes the detection works and sometimes it doesnt.
in GR:W you also get a lot of instances where your head will stick above the cover. depends on the cover you are hiding behind and the angles and slopes of the environment. nothing to do with the cover system.

In fact, in the division when you arent trying to crouch you can really play well without the cover. using the shoulder swap and staying close to cover you can tell when you are sticking out of cover to fire by the animation of the character and then you can fire. pretty effective. in Mafia 3 you have a really really well made cover system but using crouching and shoulder swap you can play it really well without it. exactly like GRW.
however in GRW the leaning is a lot more effective than in most cover based games because you lean and only the shoulders and head stick out, unlike games like the division or mafia or many other 3rd person shooters where when you "lean" you actually make a big step out of cover.
Sadly, the cover system in GRW isnt as reliable as other games and i wish it was - because it gives a good realistic tactical advantage.

@V.M.R_JaRuTo is right, the division and future solider maps look like paintball courses because the maps are set up for cover and not for realistic purposes

Also I get what you're getting at @topeira1980, the cover system in rainbow six vegas is what you are wanting where your back is to the cover and not your shoulder, but the last ghost recon game was like shoulder to the cover because it allows movement in cover, so I don't expect them to change this because what you are wanting is for a cover system where you cannot move except aim

i still disagree. every shooter game's level design looks a bit like a paintball arena to a reasonable degree. GRW as well. and for obvious reasons.
but that is not the subject of this thread.

And no - i dont expect the character to stand with his back to a wall. not at all. should stand exactly as it stands now, only not hunched forward but more upright. more straight. there is 0 reasons for anyone to hunch forward like quasimodo instead of like a normal human being. especially if hunching forward puts your nose and face in line of fire.

either that or moving the camera slightly farther to the side so you can stay in cover , even with the current hunched posture, but still have the crosshair stick out of cover so it allows you to lean.

i think that in PVP there will be a good use for leaning, but only if it functions right. no one will use it if it means that when you are standing straight you head sticks out of cover. but if you move so your head doesnt stick out of cover than you can lean....
