Additionally, run Uplay as an Admin and see if that fixes the issue. You can also try flushing your DNS (https://support.ubi.com/en-US/faqs/000024748) and resetting your Windows hosts file (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034).
I am also having an issue getting the game to start. The game simply closes itself after hitting any key during the title screen, sometimes after reaching the "contacting servers" part.
I already have an open support ticket on the matter. Just letting you know you aren't alone here.
This issue only started happening after the hotfix. 1.6 before the hotfix was running fine.
Most of problems like you describe I solved by switching language into English. ATM I know some 100% crashes when play game in (for example my language) Czech. So you can try switch to English. In this lang. is game more stable. BTW do not hesitate to contact support. They know this problem for months and will send you just trash answers. Nothing worked but I never had connection issues. Playing since launch always green NAT and rarely any disconnects until patch 1.06. Now files are broken and I still cannot start the game.
