Whats the point, CD and Key codes.

Sorry if this is in the wrong area.
I just purchased the PC RS2014R cabled edition.

So at the moment of typing this I am installing RS2014R but have an issue so too speak.

I stuck the PC disc in the drive and went to my steam account to activate the program.......Window tells me your product code requires ownership of another product befor activation.
Turns out in the leaflet in the cd casing there are two key codes..

So I used the other key code and steam accepted that code, so now I'm downloading RS2014R from steam.

What is the point of having a CD that you don't have too use.(I must have done something backward for it not too load from CD)
the first key code I tried, I'm now guessing is for the free 6 bonus songs.

Now I just have to wait till my Yamaha 212VFM arrives

Welcome to the online world. Games on CD/DVDs have been like this for several years.

There is hardly any point for the hard media. Some people like to have something in their hands, some people like it for a gift ... again physical.

Really the download vs the physical media is better ... IMO.

Also since the CD contains the the Steam client ... or a link to it .. it does save having to search for it. I guess that is something. But I think the double or triple or more times to have to install and update is not worth it. Just download the steam client ... enter the key ... install the game from the steam client ... faster and better.

The CD saves the large file download, for those still on dial-up.

IIRC, the original game download was like 6GB+. That takes a while even on my standard broadband, so having the disc speeds things up a little. Like Rcole said, I would still have to download the patches and updates, but those are smaller files.

Dial up or those unfortunate souls who have monthly data caps. Although at this point in the Dev cycle one would imagine that 90% has to be re-downloaded anyway.

or are in more rural or remote areas where speeds are slower. A coworker lives up on Storm Mountain and only gets 5mb/s. Having to download that might take a while
