This is really just personal and it wont be the same for everyone.
Let me get across why this stream was just utter disappointment for me personally. This obviously has a lot to do with one of the heroes I play. The hero that I already did make a post for and it actually been on first page for days now, with lots of views and comments. With lots of people agreeing with me there as well. Yet, there were not a damn single ubi reply, when you can see them replying to other topics that are far smaller.
Yes, I am talking about the damn orochi. In truth, I kind of stopped playing him a lot and now just working on my zerk since I got tired of trying make magic happen with two moves.
So this entire week I've been hearing in numerous posts how devs will talk about hero buffs on raider and orochi, which if I am not mistaken might have been even stated by them somewhere, but I am not about to spend hour(s) searching through net just to find it. Point it, I saw it, people that kept talking about it did not pull it out of their asses either.
The dev stream comes and not a single damn word on orochi. The chat is begging them for some answers, lots of people in chat spamming the orochi questions but they just casually ignore it and say nothing. Next week it's console patch, in two weeks a balance patch that does nothing for orochi, but at least buffs raider, guess we know who is the new raider will be... In three weeks same patch for consoles.
In short, it's them showing middle ****ing finger to anyone who even asked about orochi and showing that don't expect anything for a month at least, or better, don't expect anything at all and if you are tired of playing a hero that people call mid tier our of sheer charity, since he is not even that, let be honest here. We all get better at a game and the better we get, the worse this one-two trick pony called orochi gets. Zone is already an attack that deals not a very high dmg, is fast, but eats half of your stam, and it's already being blocked all the time, which really just leaves you with half stam and nothing else in return for it. Soon people will catch on feints into zone, which is what I now actually have to do in order to get it off on anyone decent. And then we got just top damn light, and one-two trick pony becomes one trick pony.
Yes I am annoyed, I actually waited for a damn stream for a week to see what they gonna do, and I never waited for anything like this before.
Well i came here to discuss about the "quality" of the latest devstream, but all i found was yet another post with someone complaining about the orochi being "weak" or "underpowered" which is just wrong in every sense. I said it before, I'll say it again, the oroshi is not trash tier and he is not weak. You are not supposed to "make magic happen with two moves". You are a defensive hero with some opportunities to be offensive in addition to it. You are not meant to rush your opponent down with your attacks, you are supposed to be a mobile counter attacker. And you have more than enough tools to make this work. Infact I would allmost say he is the best turtle the game has to offer, the people just use him wrong.
And i don't even know why i try this yet again, but somebody has to do it right? Let me explain to you, how to use the orochi.
Ok, so how do i get this mess started? I'll try to split the "guide" into two parts, offense and defense.
1.Offense
The orochi has side lights that are allmost as slow as his heavy attacks. those can be used to confuse the enemy. In the heat of battle, some players won't see the difference between the two animations because the speed is so similiar. try to attack with a side light, and if the enemy blocks, it, do it again. Most players won't try to parry yet because they will still be trying to figure you out. they expect you to eventually change your guard to the top and attack from there, because that's obviously one of the Orochi's strongest moves. After being blocked, watch your opponent and try to read him. Will he go for an attack himself or is he trying to be passive? If he goes for the offensive approach, you'll be at a huge advantage if you know what you are doing. but I'll get to that later. Let's just pretend your enemy will try to be defensive. Go for a side heavy now. If he tries to parry, he will most likely fail because he expected another light attack. If he just blocks, The mindgames begin. Because from here, you have three different options at your disposal. Option A: The simplest way to break his defense now, will be a zone attack. he won't be able to react to this unless he managed to predict what you where up to. If you go for the zone attack, be aware of your stamina! you've allready used a heavy attack, and the zone takes half of your stamina away. don't do anything else from here unless you want to be thrown to the ground. Option B: Another side heavy, but you cancel it. Your opponent will most likely try to parry this attack, which will give you another great opportunity for counter attacks. Option C: Guardbreak him. This is relatively save to use at this point, because after blocking your heavy attack, the opponnent won't be able to start any attacks before your guardbreak is initiated. the worst that could happen now, would be a guardbreak counter. a guardbreak counter won't hurt though. After dealing damage, try to retreat. don't do the backwards dodge! you don't want to be guardbroken. just walk backwards. If he follows you, that will most likely mean that he will attack you. again you are a defensive character, so that's where you'll be at an advantage. If the enemy doesn't follow, he will most likely disengage hhimself, trying to predict your next move. allow him to do that, and refill your stamina.
If your opponent still tries to be a turtle, try a top light. I doubt that he will parry that. If that doesn't work, do the zone flicker. If that doesn't work, play the cancel game. I think those concepts are to easy to be explained.
2.Defense. The straight forward part, and the reason why the orochi is absolutely not underpowered or weak. Is you'r opponent trying to rush you down with short range attacks? Counter with one of the following options: Option A: deflect. You are an assassin, i don't think that i need to explain why deflects are awesome. Not only do they look cool, they also guarantee damage and are easy to use once you get the timing down. As an assassin you usually don't want to block or parry a lot, because of your reflexive block that is only active for a short duration. The deflect is the perfect tool to negotiate this lack of defense. The deflect can also be used after removing your thumb from the stick. that makes a GB/GB counter much more save to use.
OptionB: the Zephyr slash. You know, the fancy move that lets you backstep into a top heavy? this is a great tool against short ranged light attacks. It can counter PK, Berserker, and the second attack in a warlord chain. Just be carefull when you do this. It is very easy to punish.
OptionC: Parry. Like every other hero, the orochi is able to parry attacks.
Is your opponent trying to throw heavies or slowerlight chains at you? Counter with one of the following options: Option A: Parry. just don't forgett that enemies can cancel heavy attacks.
Option B: backwards doge into stormrush. This is another opportunity to start mindgames. you can cancel it into other attacks, You ca cancel it into a GB, you can cancel it to bait a parry, or you can remain in the position until the enemy carefully tries to close in. this will get him closer, which inturn will make the mindgames I just mentioned a lot easier. By the way this is also a great counter for dodge spammers.
Option C: Again the riptide strike.
Option D: The 15 frame top light! this move is a decent offense tool, but it is even better at countering slow attacks. and it gives you a chance to get a GB in.
Option E: The zone attack. by the way, the zone attack is also exploitable to make your parries saver. If your stance matches the opponents stance, you can go for the zone when you would normally use the heavy. If the opponent doesnt cancel, he gets parried. if he does cancel, he gets the zoneattack into his face. A fckin save parry! how is that underpowered huh? IT makes the orochi's defense even better!
Option F: dodge attacks.
Well i hope that this will finally shut your mouth about the orochi "becomming the next Raider". He is definitely not weak just because most people only use the top lights and zones.
I honestly do think this is some of the problem, people don't want to use him as a counter attacker. He has two moves that are among the best punishers in the game and two deflects, one might be riskier but it does more damage when it hits. In any case it will be a while before they look at him, according to their matchup chart, there is only one character both in regular and high level play, he falls outside of their desired range in terms of head to heads with whereas the berserker there is only one he is in the right range with again both in high level and regular play if I recall (I don't main either of these), so people need to learn to use what he has going for him and play to his play style.
