Marker have definitely a far bigger impact than difficulty levels when it comes to how hard the game is. I understand why players use them, but to me they influence the gameplay too much for my taste.

To each his own, I guess

This works easily with a 1 or 2 chevron rating, but when its gotten to 4 chevrons, its not possible. They spawn endess multiple helo's and truckloads of guys.

My buddy and I killed hundreds in the mountains on a 4 chevron rating and after about 40 minutes we left the area. Our tactic worked because of rocky outcroppings that could be used as shields from the helo's and ground troops. Because it was mountainous they couldn't bring in trucks and the offloaded and spawned usually around a dozen guys who did searches and we shot them all while constantly running to new locations and taking out helo's. I used the MSR to 2 shot the helo's at a distance and grenade launcher up close. Ammo was a problem and we had medic drones to do saves with.

We did a hold off at this same base the OP did and once they got ramped up the come in for the attack rather than wait at the outside gate and you lose when face to face with them. The difficulty level makes a big difference also, as regular difficulty they dont kill you as easily and they dont rush you as much.

The only way to defeat Unidad, IMHO is to leave and constantly flank them, the AI will only go to your last position you fired on them from and then start a search but move slowly. If you can flank them then taking out helos and killing off the remaining foot soldiers will stop the unidad attack if done quickly as stated above.

leaving the area works every time no matter how many chevrons you have, but...helo's will follow you and see you, and must be taken out, so an HT1 or MSR or a host of other helo killers need to be employed and you have to have some cover to avoid being seen while running off.

To be honest the thing that sucks more fun out of the game than anything else is that when you get into a fun and exciting firefight a load of helicopters instantly spawn and ruin it. You know that even if you beat one another will appear seconds later so it feels pointless and unrewarding.
I'm all for having an overwhelming force turn up but it should at least be gradual and not feel like a bad arcade game, artillery fire would be better and more realistic than constant helicopters.
The game has had a lot of baffling decisions that makes me wonder if the devs even played it, but may of the others have been fixed (HUD etc...) and this is the only thing really sapping the fun for me.
