Deus Vult!
I think most people using "Deus Vult" are just riding the goofy meme bandwagon and genuinely don't mean any harm by it or think much about the history behind it. That said, there are indeed many serious far-right radicals who have appropriated the Crusades and medieval knight history as emblematic of a modern war against Muslims and modern "effete" liberalism, for example Anders Breivik, the nutcase Christian terrorist who recently shot up and killed all those kids in Norway, called himself a new age Crusader and had an entire manifesto dedicated to the exceptionalist heritage of Christian Western civilization. In this ideologically charged modern era it can be hard to escape negative associations like that, and it isn't hard to believe that some players do subscribe to such hateful beliefs and were attracted to For Honor just to realize such a disturbing power fantasy.
What's funny about it is that not all knights were even Medieval Age Crusaders, for example the Warden's helmet is a modified 15th century Renaissance Italian Barbute helmet created as a revival of ancient Greek hoplites, nothing Crusader about that at all, and really the entirety of For Honor is a kind of mishmash pastiche historical fantasy. Sure Apollyon's name is a reference to the Hebraic "destroyer" or "angel of the abyss", but even Apollyon herself in her cruel wisdom offered a strong criticism of worship in Ashfeld and clearly didn't subscribe to their beliefs (which she remarked as either inconsistent or hypocritically unfollowed).
In any case I absolutely LOVE playing the Warden and think the Knight class is the coolest (reminds me of LOTR and Led Zeppelin for some reason, especially with all the Wind and Leaves effects), but yeah I understand it can be bothersome to think others might play the class as a vote of confidence for some disturbing us-vs-them hate-driven beliefs (those Knights with tabards bearing Nazi symbols I occasionally come across are particularly concerning...). I wish there was a better battlecry for the knight class at the moment that didn't connect so many political, religious and modern connections, like "Praise the Sun!" or something more innocuous, but eh, like I said I don't think most people mean anything bad by it, not much you can do except ignore it or maybe come up with something else that catches on.
It is actually quite ironic given his name, as it's a name of a character in Michael Moorcock's books, a relatively religious character, whos family is suppose to be the keepers of the Holy Grail (aka. the most famous catholic artefact to never exist), lol'dOriginally Posted by Xynrex Go to original post
