I'd rather play precise games on an unstable connection.
I'd rather risk a bit of lag, so long as it meant staying connected.
So, it's long been established that this game has some pretty serious connection issues. And the blame for these issues can be placed pretty squarely on the admittedly clever but horribly unstable Peer-to-Peer networking system that Ubisoft have implemented. With this system, instead of it running off a separate server or being a listen server with one host, the game runs in a kind of "back-and-forth" way where all the players are kind of half-running the server and half playing it.
The reason for this weird setup is, as we're constantly reminded, "precision": In order for the game to keep all the fighters on a more-or-less equal playing field in terms of reflexes and reactions, the connection needs us all hooked up together and bouncing off eachother's networks, so to speak. Unfortunately, that means that if one person leaves, be it due to a rage quit, a disconnection error or simply needing to stop playing, then the whole system can collapse and entire games can die before they're over.
And yet Ubisoft's developers keep insisting that they "can't" switch to Dedicated servers because it was mean a loss of precision in the 4v4 games...
Now, here's my question, not to Ubisoft, but to you guys, the players: Would you rather keep the current system, where we have pretty precise games, at the cost of constant disconnect errors, long queue times and crashes... Or, would you be willing to risk the potential for some lag during matches if it meant actually getting to finish the matches themselves, and not having to wait half an hour between queue times during low-traffic periods?
I think by now my own personal stance should be pretty clear - I've just spent the past two hours trying to find a skirmish game to finish off these damn orders, and all I get are "Matchmaking failed" errors. To specify, I have "Moderate" NAT (which I only got after calling tech support and fiddling with my modem) despite having the fastest available internet in my area, and not having any issues with any of my other online games. The Skirmish queue is apparently "Very High Activity", and yet I can't find one single match.
At this point, I'd take a bit of lag in my matches any day of the week, so long as it meant I actually got to play the game what I paid money for.
But let's see if I'm just a vocal minority, shall we? What do you all think?
