I've done some testing so let be break down some actual numbers for you guys. Max attack w/ def gear nets you around ~25% more damage and ~20% less damage taken. A warden's top heavy which normally does 40dmg will do 32dmg instead, a difference of 8 damage on one of the stronger moves in the game. Light damage difference is under 5 for everyone but kensei. A max damage kensei is the only hero that can deal lethal light damage (25) on your final life bar. The reductions and increases are more significant for super heavy hitters like a charged heavy from shugoki. But in general the difference in kill potential is +/- 1 heavy attack. This isn't super significant albeit a bit frustrating.
Revenge is the only real thing to be worried about when facing off against 108gs heroes. Don't let the pressure get to you when you have 0gs vs a 108gs, let the enemy underestimate you and defeat them.

I got my damage numbers by testing lights against a PK, to get her to 3 life bars (75hp). I used 2 top lights usually 18dmg but at 125% 22.5*2=45 120-45=75. Similarly with 3 side side lights that are 12dmg at 125% 15 * 3=45dmg. All tests were done vs bots which have the base gear score of 0.
