Ok, so I'm now almost 200 hours into the game and it's been realy challenging ang fun to play. But as the time goes some flaws in game mechanics surfaced to me. And the one I wanna talk about is guardbreak and particulary how it interacts with dodge. As you all know the goal of the fight is to deal damage to opponent until it's dead. There are multiple ways to deal damage and to evade it. Lets just compare them:
Easiest way to deal damage is just hit - you choose direction and press a button. To negate the damage opponent just switches his guard to block an incoming attack. Simple, isn't it? Then there are more complex mechanics like parry and deflection, which requires more skillful approach - you have to time it right or be hit by an attack. So those mechanics can be rewarding since you get free damage on parried opponent or punishing if you miss the timings.
And then there is guardbreak - an easy-to-use mechanic that can change the tide of battle in a second. You just get in range, press a button and choose from a) "one-shot" throw into hazard, b) get free damage (most classes can land a free heavy), c) reposition your enemy in your favor (wall stun etc.). Yes, now it's way easier to counter but there are still some advantages for the one initiating a GB:
1) GB can't miss. If you are in range your success depends ONLY on enemy's reaction.
2) GB can't be punished. If you've been countered you lose NOTHING.
3) GB can't be countered during recovery frames, and that is the BIGGEST problem imho.
I mean there are so complicated mechanics in the game to simply evade damage and at the same time you can't do anything after being parried+GBed and oneshotted with a wall spikes/cliff/pit etc. But there's more - GB can't be countered if hit while dodging and this is just ridiculous. I understand that dodge is powerful mechanic that can easily be abused by some classes and needs a way to be countered but hey it's a MOVEMENT ability after all. You can't deal any damage with dodge alone, you can't win the game with it. Don't you think that it should not be punished with a guaranteed damage or even instant death? Don't you think that GB should be made counterable at least during dodge? So it can cancel and counter movement but not giving a free damage on you.
They fixed that problem... for about 3 days then they put it back to the same BS all because some 6 year old **** got butt hurt because he couldn't GB someone while he was dodging. I hate how some companies do this, they focus on people that are getting butt hurt over **** because they suck and they try to please the kid. There's a saying that I live by, if you live your life trying to please everyone then you won't get very far in life instead you'll just fall short and be hated by everyone because trying to please everyone is impossible since there will ALWAYS be someone that's an ******* and hate you for no reason other than they can.
you know the big problem with guardbreak mechanic ?
Is the fact that is still a lottery. they made it better but it still a lottery.Let me explain.I have played countless hours.There is those situations where i found myself in a bad situation.Myself.Situation where you are now heeling next to a ledge.What do we all do in this particular situation ? You dont even try to fight anymore you only focus on not being guardbreak to avoid the cliff throw. RIght ?
What happen next is you usually get trhown anyway ! How can this happen ?? How when the only thing i was doing was trying to counter guardbreak the end result is me being guardbreak and thrown off.Pls let me at least dodge away !! No because the minute you will try to dodge away from the cliff this is where the guardbreak will connect 100% If the throw didnt push you far enough youd be back in the same position where at the end you will be guardbreak and throw off
If I didnt pay attention and get thrown off it is my bad ! But when i am 100% fighting against it i should at least be able to get away.
I dont think guardbreak should be able to be rewarded a High attack .it should only be made to initiate a throw.So that way GB would be something related to something.Right now the main purpose of a guardbreak is to connect a heavy attack .This is stupid especially when you are outnumbered.Sometime i throw a gurabreak out of nowhere and i am like well ill take the free hit !
Biggest problem with GB is the fact that it rewards either a free heavy attack or a 1HK.
If GB's risk matched it's reward it would be worth the damage equivalent of a light attack. Instead it could mean 100% of your hp.
There needs to be a second guard check against being thrown to counter-act the power of all the 1HK mechanics.
Getting a free heavy attack after GB needs to go away entirely.
Do that and parry is fine because GB is fine.
I would like to add, that grabbing another fighter, and physically moving them requires a lot of effort. guard breaks should cost significant stamina, And if broken, should cost more.
I know all you spammers that rely on guard breaks won't like this, but honestly, in a Sword fighting game, use a stun move with the hilt.. no one really goes for throws and grabs, when they and their opponent hold axes and swords..
if you want to throw people , i am sure there is a great WWE wrestling game out there for you..
game is awesome, except for this one aspect.
Well I'm pretty much ok with how it lands. What I'm NOT ok with is the fact that GB is the ONLY uncounterable mechanic in game. Not always, but if you a being hit with GB ANY time besides standing still you won't be able to counter it - counterguardbreak simply will not work. This is what should be changed.

plus certain characters "grab" ability goes above and beyond realism... which is what i thought this game strives for (i.e. Warlord and Shugoki)
