As I continue to play, I've come to realize there are a lot of things that really bother me about its design.
1. There are a laundry list of bugs in the game. And it seems like every evening, something new crops up. I'm not going to go into this with full detail as the list has been overall well documented. I think, however, the most game breaking bugs are the ones where the Cover System stops working and your Drone/Binoculars stop working. I think they're linked - but whatever. It seems to me the only way to correct the issue is to fail a mission which causes a reset, or to reload the game from the main menu. Either way, I would say these need to be fixed before anything else is done. This is simply inexcusable. I mean, the Drone is half the game. I don't even think it's possible to play HUDless or on Extreme without it.
2. Outside of bugs, I've noticed some things that have bothered me about the game - features it doesn't have, but should. And if there was ONE THING my friends and I can agree on, it's that our Camouflage and Clothing options have absolutely no functional purpose in the game. It must be a million times a night when we say, "Why didn't they just do what they did in MGS3?" And the answer eludes us, because this game is begging for it so bad. I can only imagine that the reason it doesn't exist in this game is because of number 3...
3. The AI in this game is either braindead stupid, or downright broken. Friendly AI is out of this world bad, and controlling their orders with a KB+M is simply unintuitive. There are so many ways this could have been done better, and it would have been just as effective on Consoles. There is nothing about the command wheel that works on with a KB+M. You want to call in a Mortar Strike in the middle of a firefight to stop the enemy advance? Sure, try it. Here's what will happen. You'll notice that while you're in cover, you won't be shot - because that's how cover works (... IF it works...) But what doesn't work is how you select a target zone for your Mortar Strike. You have to go out of cover, just to get the stupid target zone to NOT be on the wall you're facing. But wait, "OH NO!" As soon as you get out of cover, Unidad target locks you with an unrighteous vengeance and you're dead before you can even react - even with maxed Bullet Resistance + the Commendation Medal <--- which appears to me to be a broken skill. And then, after you die and you're waiting on a revive - your team basically kills everyone before they revive you - which means you effectively miss out on all the action. So you basically won the mission, because you died, which meant your friendly AI went into god-mode to save you, because that makes sense.
4. And this is all tied together with the completely random enemy AI. I can tell a different between fighting the Cartel and Unidad. Unidad is just downright broken in all aspects. You try to infiltrate a Unidad base without sneaking? You're going to lose. It's just how it is. And the reason is because they have an infinite supply of backup, helicopters, and yadda yadda. There is no win situation with Unidad once the "HEAT" meter starts to rise. You either retreat or you die. Those are your options, because they don't stop coming otherwise. I guess this isn't such a bad thing element. It's not THAT big of a deal. My problem with them is that you are completely ill-equipped to deal with this sort of thing. They have air superiority, and you have nothing against it but your small arms weapons. It just seems to me that the reason the vehicles in this game are so ****y in the first place is because there are no RPG's or proper Anti-Aircraft weapons in the game. And all one can do is scratch their heads as to why those aren't in the game. Seriously - why aren't they? It makes ZERO sense that these guys wouldn't have those.
5. Weapon balance is all over the place. I'm not even going to go into it.
6. More on the enemy AI - their ability to track you down is superhuman. They KNOW where you are, and where you're going. You can literally watch them circle toward you on the radar if you have them marked, even if you move. And as far as I'm concerned, this just goes back to what I was saying about Camouflage. I mean really - what is the point of having all that stuff, if you're not going to have a Camouflage system in the game? Because it literally does nothing. The Ghuillie suit does nothing. It's purely aesthetic. It provides no stealth bonus, no camouflage bonus - nothing. Event he original Far Cry had camouflage as long as you wore a flak jacket! So I just scratch my head at this every time I log into the game.
7. The lack of Difficulty Options is just bothersome. Extreme is ridiculous. It's not even fun. But I enjoy that I can turn off the Enemy Cloud in the Radar. Advanced is more manageable - as the AI isn't broken. But then I can see where they are on the Radar. Well, okay - so I'll just turn the Radar Off, right? NO! Because I can't see where anything else is! I can't call out threat directions because I have no compass. I can't REALLY see where Supplies and Ammo is - especially because I can't mark them with my Drone (which you would think you should be able to.) Not that it matters, because the Drone hardly works because of the bug...
*Sigh*...
My enthusiasm for this game has waned... I am just very, very disappointed with the lack of effort toward common sense features and bugs that simply shouldn't exist.
