Dear Ubisoft - A letter to you hoping for change
Dear Ubisoft,
(I received a free copy of this game!)
I am appalled by the quality, or lack thereof, in Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Peeking around corners can be difficult, often I don’t peek out far enough and end up with my gun pointed at the wall. I would like this tweaked so that when I aim from cover I clear it, giving me a clean line of site. I've been spotted a few times as I'm edging my way to the corner, trying to get it just right, so I can take a shot then go back to cover quickly.
AI squad mates are very dumb. I will tell them to move somewhere and without fail they are unable to intelligently navigate their way to where I want them while avoiding marked enemies. I witnessed that the tactic they often like to employ is crouching in the open while slowing backing away from an enemy and then they get spotted because they won’t make their way to cover and there is cover available I assure you.
I’d like to use screenshots to demonstrate my problems with this game.
Bad texture loading. Happens often. It took a good 10 seconds for this to load in. This is unacceptable and happens often.
I tried to wrap my head around this situation so let me describe it to you. There was one dead body to my left close to the wall and behind that piece of cover. There was also a second person behind me. I did not shoot either one of them. I set up a sync shot to allow my squad mates to do it for me. And the strangest this happened. They shot them successfully from their current positions. They don’t have line of sight at all. But somehow the shots came from my left, through the wall and killed them. The third squad mate decided it was a good idea to go down the cliff to my right and hang out on some rocks emerging out of the water. This must be some brilliant tactical move I cannot possibly understand.
Here again the two on the left have a shot at their enemies. Fine. The problem is Holt. I was in almost that exact position earlier and I could not see any of the enemies out front. Yet somehow Holt can make that shot on an enemy he can’t possibly see and through two walls.
This is somehow a viable shot. They can see enemies through cliffs apparently and through this building to the other side.
Eventually I decided to make my way to do the objective and completed it.
Spoiler: Show
I make my way to the top of the cliff and what do I find? This below! The enemies still shooting my squad and my squad hasn’t moved. Not a single inclination for self-preservation. And for some reason as soon as I approach the cliff, mind you I kept a low profile throughout the mission (since practically every enemy on the island was busy over here it was easy) an enemy spots me. They have no reason at all to look behind and above them and yet they do, immediately opening fire on me. How? Why? I do not know.
These shots are hitting me somehow. See where the bullet trails are? Also, confirmed that using your squad as bullet sponges while I sneak around is a good “tactical” option.
He is somehow able to move in broad daylight in what should be field of vision for this enemy. Not the best screenshot but come on! How is this possible?
I blew this up. With C4. It was loud. It was a big explosion. The person in that guard tower didn’t notice.
Spoiler: Show
He also didn’t notice when I blew up two more! And neither did the rest of the base. I’m no expert but I would think that when three loud explosions occur everyone would notice. I guess not.
Why can’t this gun unlock? Even though I have found it and picked it up I can’t keep and customize it. Why? Because I haven’t gone to the specific region to open the specific case to “unlock” it.
Why do you keep things locked? Gotta have that “progression” right? This is a U.S. military operation, however small it may be, correct? Why can’t I get air drops for guns I want? Why must you insist on this idea of “progression” and “unlocking” things? I want access to cool weapons and abilities quickly or from the very start. Then throw me into the hornets’ nest with tough enemies which are intelligent, challenging and require thought when engaging.
I don’t like a game set up for bee lining it from icon to icon on the map to collect this thing, do that thing and a lifeless world in between. It’s a checklist of repetitive tasks to do. I could go trekking into the woods or climb a mountain but what for? If it doesn’t have an icon there’s nothing of interest there!
I have many, many complaints about this game, too many to list here and how Ubisoft makes these open world games in general. I don’t like collectibles, level locked items, repetitive missions and tasks. It’s much less about having fun and more about throwing as much fluff into the map as “content”. I write this because I know Ubisoft can make an enjoyable game but they seem stuck on a formula for their open world games, nothing in this stands out. You’ve made a large and beautiful world but that’s it.
I did a bit of co-op which not that good either. I’m still doing the same tasks I find unengaging so no, co-op doesn’t save it for me, not even close.
Ubisoft you’re good at a few things: making worlds, settings and sometimes interesting characters (Wrench, Vaas, Pagan Min). I just don’t think you’re good at making video games. I thought about putting more time into this, to uncover other problems but I have better games to play.
