Because this game would be fantastic in single player as well - IF the Team AI worked as it was meant to.
The MAIN ISSUE --
The do not defend themselves or return fire even if under fire and taking damage.
I can pinpoint exactly when this occurs.
1) When told to MOVE to a location, and once in position they now will not defend themselves or return fire even if under fire and taking damage.
2) When told to HOLD position, they now will not defend themselves or return fire even if under fire and taking damage.
When do they defend themselves?
1) When they are FOLLOWING you.
2) When told to FIRE
3) When told to MOVE to a location, whilst moving I've seen them return fire when fired upon. However, bizarrely, when they arrive at the location they will then not return fire or defend themselves.
Now if the AI worked and they would actually DEFEND themselves, I could then tactically manuever them on the battlefield! I could tell them to defend a position whilst I moved up the flank.
I would have far more tactical control of the battle.
As it currently stands, I have one option in a fire fight - FIRE.
This simply does not work -- as soon as you give them that order, chaos ensues and they run around like Rambo, I loose all control over the battle.
So PLEASE PLEASE Ubisoft, fix this. This game could be so great, with a few tweaks.

Yeah, it's honestly a little ridiculous. The command system is clunky, simplistic, and restrictive in addition to the AI acting flat out stupid. I seriously don't know why there isn't a posture command like what existed before FS where your team could quickly and easily change between recon and assault. The command system was not well thought out at all.
I feel your pain. The AI Ghost team is essentially combat ineffective, even with the Born Leader skill maxed out. All they are useful for is reviving and sync shots. I have been killed by the enemy when one of the ghosts is standing right next to the guy who shot me, been revived only to get killed again immediately because the team didnt clear the area and there was someone shooting at me while getting revived, ive been completely abandoned by my team in firefights countless times only for them to swoop in when i get gunned down, they have gotten the team spotted during stealth missions multiple times (I mean, thats just not supposed to happen...), and when they are told to "regroup" or are ordered to line up for a sync shot, they would run through the middle of an open area or just sit in plain sight of the enemy with no cover, they even got hit by a train (yes, the WHOLE TEAM at the SAME TIME)...They definitely need an upgrade on situational awareness and combat effectiveness. Overall they are just passive and dumb..
The three keys of fighting are Speed, Surprise, and Violence of Action.
Speed is out of the question when you physically cant move while ordering your team, and have to guide them every step of the way.
Surprise is ruined when your AI team gets you spotted and sets off an alarm, or runs out in the open
Violence of action is non existent when they abandon you and just dont kill the enemy, even when they are in such close proximity to them.
These dudes are supposed to be the cream of the crop, some OAF murdery-a$$ low reg badass guys who show no mercy and take the fight to the enemy. But it kind of feels like youre in a paintball game and youre playing with the little kids who sit in the back of the field and dont really do much.
