As the title says is it possible to play entirely solo, without the AI or other players?

No.. right now the only way to not use the AI is to put them on hold and then move into the area you want to go into.

Solo/single player and Offline... Yes

Solo/single Player w/o Blob AI squad... No

If you don't want the Squad Blob interfering or going loud w/o your expressed orders you must keep them on hold at all times. if you move ahead of them, check your map, see where they now are and put them on hold again... rinse and repeat. This was the case for the CB & OB but I doubt very much it changed for Final Release game.
