    Raider Match-Ups

    Hello,

I started playing Raider the other day and love him. He is so much fun playing, even though I was very bad. I stuck with him because even losing with him is fun, but I wanted to get good. After a day of killing bots I noticed incredible improvement against players. I can confidently hold my own against almost any class. Though I often lose to my own mistakes and to skilled players, I'm able to hold my own in any of the fights and usually come out on top against the average joe.

There are 3 classes that make me feel like I'm not even part of the fight. They make me feel like I'm a practice dummy that they're just wailing on.

    Peacekeeper, Nobushi, and Orochi.

I'd appreciate some tips for beating these guys so I can practice over the weekend and be able to counter them. Priority would be Orochi, Peacekeeper, and Nobushi. Peacekeeper is the hardest for me, but Orochis are more common. I played 2 Elimination last night against two different teams of 4 Orochis. Surely because of the orders, but still.

What are some reliable methods for countering each of these classes with the Raider?

Don't worry every raider has a hard time with those classes. Raider is my favorite too, but I often get frustrated and end up on my nobushi. I can only tell you from my experience but a pommel hit with a couple heavies will do serious damage and have them rethinking using you as a pin cushion. Raiders are slower than I believe they should be. Not like Raiders wear armor. Which makes the assassin classes very hard for us. Oh and with the peacekeeper don't forget to watch for the guard break.

The pommel strike is always dodged and I get heavy bleeding on the side from it.

Omg.... I checked out your link hoping for some advice and it brought me to my other thread! lmao. I made this new one for more specific answers because I was worried that posting in the old thread would get missed by a lot of readers.

That's hilarious that you gave me a link to my other thread, though lol.

Vs Orochi: watch their pattern. Every Orochi has a pattern. they fall into it naturally because they have to try to abuse their speed or they really aren't doing anything. Parry storm rush if one is fool enough to do a non garuntee'd one against you. Use feint's and stunning taps to keep them from running rampant. guard against their zone unless you can react to it, if they attempt top lights simply step into stunning tap instead of blocking. take your free damage when you can get it.Orochi's are always looking to get top lights so bait them into trying for it. When parrying into gb throw them into walls to get heavies(learning the spacing will take a bit but this does work) If no walls are around just use a light into UB cancel or a stuntap. don't rely on the UB off gb, that's a lot of stamina for moderate damage. yes it's the max punish in many situations, but stamina management comes first against heroes significantly faster than you. Manage your stamina, and keep them exhausted when possible.

Vs Nobushi: There's two ways you can go about this, depending on the Nobushi you're facing. Raw aggression can overwhelm some nobushi players once you get inside however since Raider is also meant to fight at a mid-long reach distance this isn't ideal, particularly if said nobushi can parry well. You're going to want to bait them into attacking, and either utilize your step to gb them while they're in whiffrecovery or stun tap them before going for another attack. Everytime you land stun tap you're essentially denying them the ability to use hidden stance because if they do it will exhaust them.(Note this also applies to warlord/conq full guard)

Vs Peacekeeper: You need to try to zone them out. Keep them outside their desired attack range so they can't abuse their speed against you. Control distance and you control this fight. IF they get in they'll probably do a lot of damage unless you can parry lights. If you do block a light do a light attack immediately. They'll probably hit another button but you'll be at frame advantage and will get the hit stuffing their attack. do this a couple of times and they'll start dodging trying to deflect into a punish, that's when you want to start doing a gb after a block to get your free damage. The 'average' pk is either just going to spam lights at you or try to abuse bleed so being aware of which one you're dealing with can save you a lot of trouble. try to stay on right side guard to entice leaps which you can punish and also so your guard will be place to block any zone spam they might do.

i'm probably forgetting things but in general these things should work on your average orochi/pk/nobushi. Just be concious of how often you're using stuntap, using it too much and they'll start to sit in top guard and you'll have to start doing heavy cancels to open them up or just doing yoloheavies and hoping they were expecting the tap to come out.

One other thing, stun tap is a fractured chain, you can do one light or heavy after it but you can't go into UB,

Normally, I would say... Get better, Orochi freaking sucks! Then I realized you play Raider, literally one of the worst 1v1 Heroes in the game.

You are going to have problems against every hero, I am surprised you don't have problems against Valkyrie or Warden or Berserker (just as fast).

You have no real offense against ANYONE with a proper defense, and your game consist of trying to land Stunning tab for minimum damage and maybe get a GB into Unblockable that they don't parry.

To be honestly, at top level, you have no chances in 1v1 or anything that starts in 1v1 like Brawl or Elimination. You shine in Skirmish and Dominion though, so you can probably just own Orochi in those. I love eating Orochi / Nobushi / PK in Skirmish, it's amazing. One Raged / Revenged Heavy can take 75% of their life, it's just WOW. I wonder if full attack gear plus full buff / debuff (from feats) and revenge Top Heavy can OHKO an Orochi (it seems possible). Not to mention you can environment kill from outside their camera angle.

You shouldn't have problems against Orochi. He can only do top light and zoneattack everything else is an automatic parry. Control the spacing so he can't come to your face for free.

It is indeed possible to one-shot someone. I did it with Maxed attack + Maxed Revenge Attack with the unblockable. Poor guy thought he could jump in and make it a 2v1. He was just what I needed to put me into revenge and murder him lumberjack style. I believe it was a nobushi that was the victim but I do not recall exactly.

Yes, Raider is extremely powerful in 4v4 matchups, and decimates samurai classes. His hits do 50 to 75 % damage, so you can go around 2 shotting people.

I play defensive build in elimination, so if i'm the last one standing, I can still sometimes beat all 4 players with revenge and my healing feats. Spam the unblockable against multiple opponents because it is an area attack and can take off half their life.
