PC: I cannot figure out the plane flying mechanics

Seven attempts, all crash and burn. But hey, I've gotten good at clearing the area.

So, can someone confirm if this is the correct key controls for flying the plane?

    Shift: Move plane forward
    Ctrl: Move plane backward
    S: Nose up (take off)
    W: Nose down (land)

If so, seems weird. Why not use W and S to move forward and backward, just like when on foot? Can the keys be remapped?

A/D = roll. W/S = pitch. It's very old school. If you don't care about having your right hand on the mouse for a free camera you might like to try rebinding something like right-shift/ctrl to accelerate/decelerate. It can make a world of difference.

it hink that is the industry standard for flying a plane in a (non simulator-) pc game.

think of wasd as the flight stick. w pushes the stick forward, s pulls the stick back, so:

    w - stick forward
    s - stick backwards
    a - stick left
    d - stick right

Need to have the capability of using a joystick for A/C flight, might be easier. I am on PC with XB360 controller and I haven't made a landing yet.

Thanks guys. Thanks to your advice I finally figured out how a take off and land. The landing wasn't pretty but the plane was in one piece so... win.

I also discovered the joy of rolling to evade a missile, only the get taken down by a second one.
