As the title may be a little unclear.. My question is: Is it possible to parry an attack, i.e the Raiders unblockable swing, if he is not locked onto you but rather your teammate.
I have tried countless time to parry attacks not directed toward me, I have not succeeded once. So, is it possible or not?
I've parried another guy next to an area attack and it seemed to knock both away, but not parrying the actual area attack not directed at me. With the camera angle I couldn't really see what my teammate was doing so he could have parried at the same time which is why both were knocked away. If you're free to try to parry attacks directed at a partner why not just interrupt the attack from behind the enemy instead?
I'm certain I've parried outside attacks directed at me before (which would include if a raider tried an unblockable swing at me), but would imagine that if you were caught in the big orange arc directed at someone else you would still get hit, because you would be taking damage from the swing before the parriable impact moment that the raider's target is trying to parry.... or is that just forced logic?
outside-parries work the same way as outside-blocks do:
you have a short window of "counter everything" after you successfully countered the first attack.
so if 3 people throw hits at you at the same time, if you block the first one (no matter the direction), all of them get blocked.
same is true for parries: if you parry the first attack, all attacks within a short time after will get parried too. (tested this with 2 berserkers using zone-attacks against me)
Yes you can.
At least with the bigger swing ones. Ive been standing next to friend that had the (ive done it to 3 enemies so ill list them all) raider, nobushi, or shukgoki clearly locked onto them. The enemy revenges and goes for the zone attack and i parry it. Seems to be any move that would also hit you in its ark you can parry even if its not aimed at you.
There is confusion about this because it seems like it depends on the attack, or the type of attack. I haven't tested this or anything, but based on personal experience and others' answers I can say with relative certainty that some attacks can be parried and some cannot when they are targeting someone else.
It's not just a "it depends on the attack" kind of answer as much as a "depends on the TYPE of attack" answer. Basically, any area of effect attack can be parried by someone who is not the target. This means all zone attacks. I believe, however, that you must be towards the beginning of the attack to parry it due to the way the parry-window works. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't parry a zone attack after it has hit your buddy but before it hits you. You must be the first person being hit. The means if the zone attack is coming from the enemy's left side you will need to be on the right side of your buddy who is being targeted.
The Raider's unblockable attack can be parried by an outsider because it is a zoning attack. The Kensei's side heavy cannot be parried by an outsider because it is not a zoning attack. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've seen nor been able to pull off a parry against a side-attack when not be targeted.
The Shugoki's side charged attack may be an exception as it's basically a zone attack, too, though not technically. If the Shugoki's unblockable is parryable by a nontarget enemy than I think it's likely that any other side unblockables can be parried, too. I don't know of any except the Raider's zone attack and Shugoki charged attack.
