Tips for upgrading PC (GTX 760, i5 4570)

My PC is built for photo editing, as I game mostly on my PS4. But I just bought Wildlands to play with friends on PC, and would like your guidance on upgrading it.

I got around 48fps with my preferred settings in the open beta at 1080p: max draw distance, temporal AA, and rest mostly at their lowest setting. I am considering upgrading for higher fps and image quality. What's the best return on investment; GPU or CPU, and which model?

I prefer high draw distance to get the most of the gorgeous terrain of the game, followed by higher framerate at around 60fps, rest is optional. Although I have a 4K monitor, I would play at 1080p as my budget doesn't allow 4K gaming. My budget is 200-300 EUR/USD.

    My current rig:
    GTX 760
    i5 4570
    MSI Z87-G45 GAMING mobo
    32GB RAM
    Dell 4K monitor

GPU for sure. What GPU you are after depends on your budget. The 960 4gb and 970 do surprisingly well even with a weak processor and are cheap now, or there is the 1070 and 1080 if price isn't an issue

    Thanks!

I could get a second hand 970 with 4GB for less than 200 EUR, or a new 1060 with 6GB for 270 EUR. It's quite a price jump for what looks like only a 12% increase in fps.

Do the two extra gigabytes of RAM make a big difference in a game like Wildlands? Or any other reason to prefer 1070 over 970.

I would settle with the 970 if that's the case, the performance increase for the price doesn't seem worth it. I recently bought a second hand but fairly new 960 4gb and that holds up well and the 970 is significantly better than that. When considering a card with 6gb vram I would only be looking at the 1070 or 1080 as that is where the real performance is at the moment but a 970 for Wildlands will serve you just fine

I did noticed in the CB & OB that the game loves to grab your Vram like its going out of style and it did not do much with my regular RAM... is that a new thing or this has always been the case?

Your rig is even beefier than mine and my GPU has only 2GBs of Vram so I am thinking that the GTX970 4GB should be all you need to have medium to high settings... People with higher end rigs have complained that the game is un-optimized but others have claimed playing on 4K and Ultra with no issues so, as always... conflictive info is the norm but it seems like you are content with 1080P (like I am) and opt for other things to get a better gameplay and more FPSs.

The i5 4570 is more than good enough of a CPU for GRW, and the game does well using the available threads.

I would upgrade the GPU and it seems if you are going for either a sub 200 euro 970 or a 270 euro 1060 I'd pick the 970, performance wise they are very close, although the 1060 is more energy efficient and overclocks more stabily.

However it's a bad time to jump on a GPU upgrade because AMD is coming out with its Vega lineup soon and we should see some price drops of Nvidia cards in the near future, like really soon.

If you need the upgrade before release then just grab the 970.

I read 1060 was not performing as good as one could expect, so i ordered a 1070 this was the best price i could find, with free shipping to my door (i live in sweden i think its sent from Germany but im not sure...)

As per recommendations, I went with a used MSI GTX 970. According to some Youtube videos I should expect close to 60 fps on very high settings with my CPU using the open beta framerate test. I'll report back when I have it thoroughly tested.

Thank you for all the help and tips!
