I have a rep 6 and a rep 1. I user keyboard and mouse. I'd say I can cgb about 75% of the time against players. So good, not pro by any means.

It comes down to 3 things.

1 - I changed gb from mmb to Q. My finger is always ready to press it. Always.

2 - Hit it right when you hear the sound of impact. Boom. Tap. Sometimes they'll try it a few times in a row. It shouldn't be a problem.

3 - BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT you can make is to anticipate it. Sure, as a general concept, be ready at all times. But after you've played this much, you should start to pick up when each class usual goes for the gb. And obviously, if you block/parry them a few times, you should obviously expect a gb attempt soon.

Once you start getting better with faints, that usually puts people on the defensive but also gets through their defences easier and you'll be the one initiating action most of the time and they'll worry about countering your gb that the other way around.

My fave is fighting a 1v3 and timing my blocks and parries well but being ready for the gb and countering it repeatedly. It's honestly the most enjoyable part for me right now... an undergeared rep 1 char preventing 3 people from killing him for minutes. (Super mindful of proper spacing, you get next to a wall or ledge, it's over)

Mastering cgb does make a noticeable diff imo. Good luck op.

Yup, the K/M mouse is DEFINITELY a friendlier setup for being ready to engage whatever offenses/defenses you need. It's like the difference between having 1 assistant you call on to go run whatever errands you need, vs having a dedicated person at each of those errands that you call on directly.

Hmmm, so now do I ditch the controller (which feels like a more natural thing to use for this type of game, and what I'm already used to) and continue to feel like a chump?...Or do I put in the time to rewiring my brain for using the K/M and finally be able to counter some GBs and feel like a champ?

Or make a petition for Ubi asking them to allow us to change the controls on PS4 and Xbox one so you could put the GB on L1 and trade more comfortable gameplay for a worse communication with others (for me personally, the choice is easy)
It's actually something I don't understand, why so many devs force peoples to use dedicated controls on consoles...It would be so much less confusing for players who are used to others gameplays if they could just change them the way they want (coming from Dark Souls, how many time did I pressed circle to dodge during the closed beta...).

EDIT : BTW, I realized that you can remap the command on your PS4 controller through the menu....could be very helpful here.

I think in an actual pvp match im thinking of to many things at once so when it comes im like a second to late as i was planing my own strategy in my head as well as thinking about what they are doing
Yeah this is probably the most usual reason for players to miss it. You don't really need to have good reflexes for it. The problem is multitasking and the ability to realise what's happened in a heat of the moment when you focus other details.

I can find the Options menu and then controls, but don't see anywhere where it lets me swap out buttons on my PS4....where are you finding this...?

Rep has nothing to do with your skill level. You can be rep 9 and still be completely trash at the game.

I suggest you practice more. Tons of players laugh at guard break attempts. They are extremely easy to counter.

If you just blocked a few attacks and you are staring eachother down you know it's coming. If you are close to a ledge you know it's coming etc.
ever since I started doing that (going by sound) I cgb most attempts, OP, u should try this!

next to the massive problem to counter a guardbreak, i REALLY hate the 'lock on' effect. how often I try to dodge it (this is also with normal attack btw) instead of countering it and he just turns with me or worse, just sticks to me when i dodge backwards. and this goes for a LONG distance. The counter becomes a sure hit guided missle FFS!! why can't a dodge work on the guardbreak?
The counter guardbreak for me almost never works. even at the right timing. i will practice it a bit more but to me it is broken. maybe they can change it by clicking R3 or something. now it just doesn't work well.
