Almost Rep 5 and still can't counter a Guard Break reliably

I play from a PC with XOne controller connected via USB (main is Lawbringer). I've heard 3 variations on when to press the GB button to counter an incoming GB against you:
    1. IGNORE the initial GB icon on them, and ONLY press it when they actually start to touch you
    2. Again, ignore the initial GB icon on them, and press the button when you see a tiny white shield on your own toon to counter
    3. Listen for when they grunt during the GB attempt and then click the button to counter

I've gone into the Advanced Practice and can GB interrupt that bot all day long without a problem (using the #1 method from above), but as soon as I fight anyone (or bot) else, the timings seem different and I'm down to like a 2 out of 10 successful interrupts.

In the recent patch it was noted the GB mechanics were changed back to how it was in BETA, but nothing's changed with the interrupt that I can tell (I still use the #1 technique from above to interrupt the bot in Advanced Practice).

Am I missing something in the mechanics, or anything else I should keep in mind?...Or is it a matter of just keep on grinding and hopefully I'll just "get it"?

    Thanks.

The timing seems to be very strict. I tried testing it with a friend in a custom match, and I couldn't consistently CGB for the life of me. The players who can do it repeatedly must have some lightning reflexes.

If by "strict" you mean "totally completely all over the place" because it varies based on the animations of the characters.

Can't wait for the patch to come to PS4 and fix this garbage. Too many Orochi and Warden ****ters who keep abusing it.

yeah welcome to the club im rep 7 and still can't get it in an actual pvp match ... i can get a 100% cgb on the advanced training and like 7/10 on bots ... as soon as im in an actual pvp game ... i maybe get 2/10 ... I think in an actual pvp match im thinking of to many things at once so when it comes im like a second to late as i was planing my own strategy in my head as well as thinking about what they are doing

there are many situations where guard break is uncounterable so if you don't know this it can make you think you are screwing up the timing and the game doesn't tell you this either

if you get parried, the enemy gets an uncounterable guard break. if you are guardbroken during the wind up of a heavy attack it is uncounterable. if you are guardbroken during or shortly after a dodge, during recovery for certain attacks if you miss or are blocked, there are other situations as well depending on hero

I go by sound and it seems to be very consistent. Press the button as fast as you can after the guard break sound. It should be less than half a second after so it sounds *tatat* from the GB and CGB sounds combined. Also know when to be ready for it. If you just blocked a few attacks and you are staring eachother down you know it's coming. If you are close to a ledge you know it's coming etc.

Something a lot of people don't understand is that CGB are significantly easier to do on a keyboard than it is with a controller (this is why there is so many differences of opinions about GB being hard or easy on this forum).
While playing with a controller you have to keep your finger on R3 contently because otherwise you're not able to block any attack properly so if your opponent is performing a GB, you have to release the switch and press the GB button which mean you have to be ABSOLUTELY certain that it's coming unless you have some pretty good reflexes.

A player playing with mouse + keyboard can keep a finger on his mouse's middle button without compromising his defense.

This is so true. Im playing on PS4 and obviously my right thumb sits on R3 most of the time and its so uncomfortable having to quickly press Square in order to tech GB. I was actually thinking they should allow us to customize the controls because of this issue.

I've trained many students, most have a problem countering guard breaks. I trained myself extremely well on guard break countering and defense so believe me when i say my advise is pure: First thing you should do is go back to the main tutorial and when you get to the part where it helps you counter guard breaks, practice there for a bit. The way it works is, not when your opponent uses the guard break, but when they actually HIT you with it, as in shove against you, thats when you hit your own guard break button to counter it. Trust me when i say youll master the timing perfectly. Heres whats going to be your problem: You ALWAYS have to be aware during combat! whenever you're in pvp or player vs ai, whereever. Whenever youre close to an opponent you always want to watch for guard breaks, you have to be aware and see when its coming. Why is it so important? if you get guard broken your opponent gets an opportunity to do whatever they want with you, their most favored thing to do while youre stun locked is get a free hit or throw you. Bottom line is, mastering the timing is truely the easy part. But you need to always be aware during combat. Hope this helps cuz its looong.

That makes a LOT of sense. 1 thumb that has to handle 4 buttons AND a joystick vs. a dedicated finger on the middle-mouse button.

...Alright then, time to set aside the controller and see what I can do with K&M.
