After many hours into all game modes (5 reputation ranks) since the game's release, here are some reflections on the state of the game.
I won't dwell on connection problems, but those remain the game's primary flaw. Matchmaking errors, dropped matches, lag, and host switching are annoyingly frequent -- frequent enough that I'm not comfortable recommending the game to friends yet.
Aside from that, I'm generally happy with For Honor. Combat is intense and challenging. The world is very well realized, visually. The campaign was fun and immersive. Gear, classes, weather variety, Orders, and war map help to keep it meaningful with long-term goals. Thanks for the faction war particularly, since I asked for that in early beta!
What are Events? Y'all haven't communicated that well to players. Have they been implemented yet? Or are they only activated if or when a faction capitol is attacked? It's hard to get excited about Events without knowing anything about them.
Dominion mode vs AI is my preferred mode. All other multiplayer modes are variations of dueling, and the Story mode is more scripted. So I hope Ubisoft eventually adds another Dominion-like mode with non-hero soldiers and lots of dynamics to feel more like an epic, unpredictable battle. I posted some ideas in another thread.
I'd be more inclined to replay Story mode if I could play with my preferred class(es). Maybe that's possible in co-op, but I haven't tried that yet. None of my friends bought the game.
Free Mode or another practice mode needs an option to select one's adversary class. Half of a class's reportoire gets nullified during duels against a Heavy or Assassin, so practicing against a Vanguard isn't good preparation. Or task the PR team with making more strategy videos.
The reduction of tactical options against some enemies is frustrating. But I appreciate that one can't fight all ememies the same way, so it's probably a good thing ultimately. Not being able to block an endless series of light attacks after missing the first is most annoying. Dodging seems to be the only way to counter that... but only after being hit 3 or 4 times already, if I'm still alive.
It's annoying that a dive attack from above doesn't work against an enemy ascending a ladder.
I'd like to be able to inspect another player's customization and emblem while a battle is setting up. You could just let the player use the Left Stick to move the camera from one character to another.
I've been focusing on playing as Knights so far. The Lawbringer is most fun and the Warden is least enjoyable for me. I have most difficulty fighting Samurai, particularly the Shugoki.
I can't wait for more fighter options! If most players prefer PvP modes, that's my bad luck. But please don't forget about us PvE fans who sprung for the Gold Edition.
