It's hard to describe how I feel about this game I am excited and underwhelmed at the same time. I have finished the open beta, solo. I have yet to find people to play co-op with and I am sure co-op is where your primary focus on the game was and it shows...badly.
-> Your customization is something I have been looking forward to a lot. While it is complex and offers a lot of variety many of the options lack colour options. Though, the worst part from a singleplayer perspective is that you cannot customize the AI. I don't care if they have their own personality and weapon set-ups but being incapable of altering their look is absurd. If you wish to have a more militaristic look you can't. If you wish to change them all to have night-camo, winter etc, you can't. Running around in a ghillie suit or military gear looks ridiculous when you are the only one and it smacks you hard in the face just how dumb it looks. I ended up just following the AI lead of civ gear, due to it just feeling awkward. Please this needs to be addressed for singleplayer.
-> AI Teammates are horrendous. They function great when you give them an order to open fire, or sync shot, breaching comm buildings was great.. When you attempt to stealth however, they miss the mark hard. You have previous titles within Ubisoft that have exemplary AI (R6:Vegas, Brothers in Arm). I've had my AI standing behind me at different distances and just watch enemies walk up on me as I am scouting and spot me. The worst though is sneaking up on an enemy compound having an AI teammate call out a machinegun in a bunker. Then proceed to instead of sneak to the left wall as the rest of us run full sprint infront of the machine gun. The turret opens fire and my stealth is lost. Also, look towards previously mentioned games for ideas on how to better the combat command wheel. It would simplify it.
-> Driving is the worst I've seen in a Ubisoft title. I really don't need to expand on this. The flying while most dislike it I actually enjoy. Though, my helicopter randomly lifting up when I am trying to get its nose down is odd.
-> The quick kills are great and nice when playing on harder difficulties. I was concerned that playing on extreme would mean more shots had to be wasted. Thank you for not doing this.
- Sync Shot needs to be fixed for playing without markers.
-> Considering Army of Two had it, I do believe you should be able to keep an enemy weapon if you bring it back to one of your outposts. I tried and it would not unlock. It's minor but quite disappointing when you cannot keep a favourite weapon because you didn't go and unlock it properly.
-> I figured you wouldn't have a variety of missions from the start so it hasn't been as great an issue for me as it seems for other people. Though I question the longevity of the game and how quickly people will get bored doing the same things over and over.
-> Technical issues plague the game. Consistent freezing and lagging video when playing the game. Slow loading the map/inventory sometimes, it will freeze while it figures out what it's supposed to do. For being so close to launch there are still quite a bit of technical issues that needs to be ironed out. Though I can hope that it's just because it was a beta.
-> Graphically it is a beautiful game, I am thoroughly enjoying the view but despite having max distance I get considerable pop-ins and enemies are still not being shown walking around camps until I get closer. Hard to scout from a distance and get a read of the layout if you can't see enemies.
-> The story is simple but enjoyable. I like the layout for how you've got the enemies setup and how I can take them down whichever order I like.
-> I agree with other people that the world does feel underpopulated and lacking. Though it is nice on realistic when you've got a mix of civs and targets and have to assign threat quickly in escalating situations.
-> That being said enemy AI is very weak and often just run straight towards you. It would be nice if they were a little more tactful.
-> When they work the app/network will be great additions for those of us who will be playing realistically.
-> With what I've seen why even have boats? The single boat I went up to was a small fisherman like boat. It was half on land and I needed to push it with a vehicle to get it into the water then it was I assume "busted" and would not let me drive it.
-> Would be nice if once I destroy a SAM site that it stays destroyed. Even if you want to repopulate the area with enemies (Let's say a new group moved in at a later time) It is terrible to fly over what should be a safe site only to have a SAM lock on to you.
-> Gunships need better controls for pilots to fire with. The way the flying is in-game, it is difficult to fly and shoot the guns and missiles with any semblance of accuracy.
These were my issues and concerns with the game after finishing the beta. I hope some of these will be addressed before the launch and hopefully some more later on. I like the game it's strange, I have a lot of issues with it but I do like it. Though I really do hope some of the more gamebreaking issues get addressed or this game will get tiresome really quickly. Cheers.
Hello oFuzzywuzzy,
Thank you for sharing your observations, thank you for your support despite your mixed feeling concerning the Beta. We sure hope that you'll find people to play coop with. Don't hesitate to look for people here.
Cheers,
