I want to be able to change my knight's appearance because I didn't know the grey boxes were selectable when I first played.

The fact that you would *never* be able to change your gender or attire when replaying story mode (and not informed about it to boot) is a pretty big mistake on the devs part. I mean, this is a PvP oriented game, but that doesn't mean the story mode should have been treated this way.

I was pretty surprised that the story mode choice of character is permanent. Seems like an oversight, as being able to change appearance/gender should've been in the game from the beginning.
