I agree with you OP. At decent+ level the gameplay is a chore, literally. The core gameplay.
Combos become none-existent, hardattacks become useless. Blocking attacks become to easy. Only way to do damage is the "free damage", either parry or guardbreak someone. There is no interaction between the players. I presume that a lot of lesser players dont see this and all they see is "something else", you cant argue with those or discuss the game with those.
This is about the health of the game. Not some random mumble rumble to buff some class or change something just for the sake of it. These are stuff that literally needs to be taken care off.
Combos needs to be put into the game. Free damage needs to go away. Revenge needs a redesign, feats needs a serious look as well. Literally one shotting someone with a feat or take 75% of the HP is BAD GAME DESIGN and should not exist.
A game should be between interaction and these all things i just mentioned is BAD INTERACTION or perhaps even NONE-existent interaction.

The comments are what is interesting(the last six or so), i will try and sum it up:
For example, we were discussing that instead of parry doing free damage it instead switches the initative and everyhing is still defendable.
Also discussion about making combos work. Blocking not interrupting the light attacks, comos have more variation. So overall, no free damage, parry switch intiative(or something else but no free damage at all), combos actually work consitently, no interrupting on blocks.
We didnt touch much about guardbreaks, dodge or feints. I havent really thought about about those at all actually. The game has so many issues atm, the block/attack needs a drastic change first of all.
Also he suggests that blocking heavy attacks should be a bit harder and i liked his concept:
Half and full block on heavy, to block a full heavy attack you need to be in the same guard for x time. So you have to react fast when you see a heavy. If you react slow and get to the right block spot right before the attack hits, its a half/block.

My suggestions are more akin to making combos available in some way(if you read it, remember that when i say uninterruptible i only mean when someone blocks the attacks), some added feature with "holding left mouse button" and releasing to trigger a combo or some other effect such as a gap closer for some hero or something else.
Its touching alot of what was said in the first link in this post(in the last 6comments~), probably not neccesarry to read it.
