Those of you who have mastered dueling, care to shed some light on a few points?
Explain when do you parry? I think i make the mistake of trying to parry every hit thrown at me and thus falling into the trap of actually taking damage from hits i'd be able to comfortably block otherwise.
What is the cooldown period after being hit in which you must only parry? I frequently eat an attack, then try to parry the following attack only to eat that one as well.
Unlbockables (raider side heavy, kensei top heavy) - dodge or parry?
Warden specific: can a top heavy unblockable be crushing counterstriked or must I dodge or parry it?
Unblockable charge attacks (shoulder bash, raider run, head butt, shugoki lard train): what happens when the two collide?
Is the timing for parry/crushing counterstrike always the same? (Crushing counterstrike has a slightly harder window of execution) or does it depend on the speed of the enemy attack?
The Berserker spin to win attack coming from the left. Is that thing parriable at all? Or must i block it? I frequently eat at least the first and sometimes the second hit too. I hate that attack.
If someone can give me some points on actual frame advantage, mini stragger from hitting the enemy, attck speeds etc. that would be great.
There are 3 ways you can block/ counter an attack in this game,Originally Posted by satorbg Go to original post
Regular Block: Have you guard matching you opponents,
Parry: Have your guard matching your opponent but also trigger heavy attck in same diraction right before impact.
Deflect: Not all characters have deflect but you should check the characters moveset. Deflect by dodgig in the direction of the attack just before you are hit, not at the time you see the attack indicator but a delayed dodge right before impact.
There is never a period that you must "only" parry, its very situational, i.e you could try to parry after taking a hit by the raider and he goes for an unblockable sideattack since you are stuned a little from his first hit trying to dodge might not be an option. But its allways situational. Parries are also great for setting up a combo chain or a guard break.
"The Berserker spin to win attack" yes it can me parried but its hard since the attacks are so fast, it can also be dodged to the sides or just a normal block.
When it comes to unblockalbe charge attacks I cant reallt comment on, have not tested this out much yet. But maybe someone can comment on this.
Hope that helps![]()
Mate thanks for the reply but if you read my post you will see that I'm talking specifically about parrying. I don't need a lecture on block/parry/deflect/dodge, I know that. But sometiems I can't seem to parry attacks after being hit, so i was wondering if that is because the enemy gets some sort of frame advantage or if its because the attacks are light and thus i miss the parry window. Not talking about chained attacks.
Hmmm... good question, sorry I missed your point there.
Regarding the parry after taking dmg and frame advantage i'm really not sure, but i have parried light attacks after being hit im sure.
So its should be possible, but the timing might be harder since you are stunned for a fraction of a second and so fewer frames to react to next incoming attack.
sorry for not being able to give any better advise, what character do you play with?
Parry heavy and unblockable attacks, dodge unblockable shoves, charges (lawbringer, congueror, shugoki, warden).Originally Posted by satorbg Go to original post
Parry first or last heavy strikes, trying for the middle strike after blocking or taking a hit has even tighter timing, and if staggered may be near impossible. To my knowledge no heroes have a heavy combo that exceeds 3 strikes in the chain.
Unblockables I mentioned above, your response depends on the type of unblockable and you will learn who throws what from practice and familiarity with the heroes.
Crushing counterstrike afaik opens with a combined block and attack similar to what the valkyrie does. Since its unblockable, I don't think a move combining a block and attack will be sufficient. I would parry or dodge to be safe.
Not sure on priority, but I haven't seen anything out hit the "shugoki lard train". I have seen it get blocked by the ai though.
Should be the same, but each attack shows you with the flash of the indicator when it can be parried.
If you mean the third hit in their heavy combo where he has hang time, yes that can be parried. If you mean their Light+Heavy zone attack, not sure, because I think its an alternating light, heavy, light, heavy, so you might need to parry the heavy specifically.
Thank you for making this post. I am also struggling with the perry machanic in the game as it doesnt seem to get the same attention blocking does when you first start the game. Is the key to have a heavy attack collide with a heavy attack at the same time as your opponent (seems very hard if your playing a slower class) or is the idea just to hit the heavy attack button as soon as a heavy attack is coming in. I think once I get down the perry I will go from kinda trashy to somewhat ok so this is the exact post I was looking for
You can parry when red arrow flashes meaning just before you are hit.Originally Posted by NSAbox Go to original post
To op, if you have trouble parrying i would only try to parry heavy attacks and unblockables because these are slow attacks which are not that hard to parry. Once you get used to it you can even try to parry lights which is way harder but when you know the character and playstyle of your opponent it might not be that hard. Its gets trickier when you get better because you will get opponents who feint a lot and will bait your parries which they can use against you. Its not that hard when you get used to it. The best way to practice is in practice mode against lvl 1 bot Raider. He uses just heavy attacks so you can get used to it there by practicing only parrying.
Focus on the hero rather than the attack indicator, that way you'll be able to see the attack animation better and be able to identify light and heavy attacks. When I first got the game my eyes were locked on the indicator which meant I wasn't getting any information from my opponents animations, when I stopped doing that and watching the hero itself I could still see the attack direction indicator just fine but I able to diagnose the type of attack better which improved my parrying immensely, with the added bonus of allowing me to recognise patterns and other information too.
