You know, the way I see it, the GB could be fixed to cater to the most vocal playerbase while still encouraging precise timing.
Make it so that the CGB using the beta timing put both player in a neutral state after the CGB, but if you used the timing from the game at release, it would staggers the agressor or put him in a vulnerable state like when your attacks gets parried or I don't know maybe even making the agressor trips if he has no stamina,
That way you would have both playerbase happy. Newer players and player that did not master the timing from the game at release would still be able to defend against GB, and higher level players and those who got the timing right would be able to punish the GB attempt more severly. Seems like a win-win where the mechanic is pretty easy to get into while still offering a skillceilling that would reward good player that got their timing right.
I'm very confused by this discussion.
I played the Alpha and Beta (open and closed).
I recognize how the system has changed, but I watched the tutorial/practice mode once when the full game came out and it seemed to me that i'm supposed to initiate WHEN the enemy physically touches me. Not when I first see them wind up the attack (broken red shield) but when their char physically touches me.
I practice such on the bots for a bit and once i'm happy with my performance, I did some custom games with a friend to play around more. We both got to the point where we felt we could reliably CGB eachother.
We head on into brawls as a team and test out our skills. Not only do we fare well, but we can reliably CGB enemies when they try to go for environmental kills.
When I hit the forum, I see people en masse complaining about the mechanic as well an official post from UBI saying they're returning it to the beta state.
This dissapoints me because in the beta I felt it was too easy to counter and required no timing, just "see a shield, spam button and poof, it counters". Now you have to time it...that seems more skill based to me.
Is it just the matter of latency making it difficult for people?
the problem i have isn't with the cgb at all. when i got the game, i hopped into the advanced training and immediately got the hang of cgb. in bot matches, i can cgb every single time. i never get guard broken.
however
the problem lies with my spotty latency. i do not have a very stable connection. my laptop also does not have a LAN port as i'm using a razer blade (2015). therefore i'm forced to rely on my wireless connection. this causes many problems. i would cgb with the same exact timing as with the training and bot matches, but it would never work. i'm a third rep peacekeeper, and i have never successfully cgb online against actual opponents. i mostly rely on reading when they're going to gb (which is fairly easy since people spam it) and then i just attack before they gb, giving me that guaranteed hit. however, when there are times that i cannot read their gb, i cannot counter, because the window is constantly changing due to my latency. i don't have a bad internet connection by all means, my NAT is always open and green, but others who have a higher ping have an inherently bigger advantage than me. it makes the game unfun for me since i've mastered the mechanic but my connection is what stops me from successfully performing a cgb.
I was going to sit back and read but i just can't do that any more since half of you have autism. GB is broken and i will explain why.
1. There is no real punishment for GB spamming. It does not cost alot of stamina and it does not matter if you get countered because it just cancels rather than punishes the initiator, therefore there is no real reason not to just spam it at someone
2. Connecting a guardbreak takes more stamina from the victim than the attacker. This is a ******ed system. Therefore the person getting stunned gets hit and loses stamina. That's game breaking.
3. Guardbreak can be chained such as the infamous warden combo with the double tap light guardbreak cycle. Takes away the skill from the game if you do nothing but hit immobile players.
4. GB can hit you mid dodge, even dodging backwards. If they guardbreak you at the time you dodge back, it will get you no matter what. It extends the range and they will magnetize to you through the entire length of your dodge. Kinda broken if they can hit you from 6 feet away.
5. This is a sword fighting game not a boxing game. Its supposed to be about back and forth attacking and blocking with parrying, deflecting, etc. It's called "For Honor" not "Honorably Punch Eachother in the Face and Attack Only When They Aren't Moving". Anyone who wants to say otherwise can shove it.
Truth is, most people who don't want the system changed are the ones who spam the button and the game works in their favor. The only people who are getting the CGB are the ones who were already GBing in the first place so their finger is already on the button. Pretty easy to react when that's the only button on your controller/keyboard.
