    RPG or a game with RPG elements?

    Not trying to start an argument but why do some people say it's a game with RPG elements when on their website it says it's a RPG, on the back of the game box it says it's a Modern Military RPG and even in this video the game director answer to the question "I think you described it as a light shooter" reply is "no no, it's really a RPG"

    About the 4 minute mark.

    Game with RPG elements. Division is not an RPG.

    From modern AAA games: Witchers and Mass Effects are RPG's.

    Proper multiplayer RPGs see SWTOR and ESO.

    This game has no idea of its identity.

    Then quite frankly they should not advertise is as an RPG which is exactly what they are doing (go to their official site and it says) OPEN WORLD RPG

    I have approx. 2000 + hours in ESO that's an RPG the division is not so they shouldn't advertise it as one.

    In Sweden, this a bonafide RPG. The rest of the solar system? Not so much.

    I honestly thought this was a RPG from the moment I was excited about the release till now. It's seems like after a years release they've turned around and said "Nah, it's not a RPG anymore, just has a few RPG elements in it" I just feel it's so wrong to change the game this much after a year it's been released.

    Sure, let's just ignore the fact that there's a lot of 3rd person shooting.

    Rainbow Six has gadgets. Is that an RPG? Nope.

    Warface has items and armor with stats and leveling up.. Is that an RPG? Nope.

    Other then "item stats" (and a few abilities) what makes TD a RPG? Story? That goes into FPS games too. Because they say so? I think not, I got my own perception/opinion about what an RPG game is.

    Mass Effect is an RPG because of things like choices, branching paths, making you feel like you're in a big universe and not just "playing a game". TD is as far away from RPG as you can get. Once you get past the story (Which has NO RPG elements in it like choices and branching paths like a true RPG game would) then it just stops trying. You just go do undergrounds and kill things with shooting. You go into DZ and fight players and kill things. Where's the RPGness?

    As such I'm labeling this as a third person shooter. Vindictus is more RPG then this because of its constructed hub area with NPCs that talk to you on a DAILY bases and give quests all over even if you do hack and slash things to death. And the story and quests last for a while. In multiple mission areas. Each with it's own story with each area being replayed (some 10 or so in each zone of which is also 10 or so, and this is before season 2). TD DOESN'T DO THAT. It doesn't even try to do that. It does only the bare minimum and that's not nearly enough. About 10 or so single missions, 4 incursions and the rest as DLC. And... that's it. A quick story that's done in a few days as well. Since when do multiplayer games have you going through a story in that short amount of time?

    Once TD stops trying to be something it's not the devs will be able to focus on what it can be and is. Be it "it's own thing" or more likely a 3rd person shooter. Either that or the devs need to add a LOT more RPG elements into the game for it to pass as a RPG game IMO. It's probably easier to do the former then the later though.

    Calling this game an RPG was a marketing strategy to appeal to a broader audience. They played up the RPG aspect with some trailers and sold more copies of the game than it deserved to sell.

    The way this game was marketed was pure (evil) genius.

    It's false advertising. Plain and simple.
    RPGs have roles to play and choices that change the outcome or completely change the world.

    This isn't even a good shooter. It is 0% RPG.
    Exactly RPG = Role Playing Game.

    Three Roles:

    Firearms = Weapon Damage

    Stamina = Tank

    Electronics = Spell power

    The game has all three, although they fail to be utilised correctly in the traditional sense.

    Hilarious amounts of inexperience...

    When was the last time you saw a modern game defined by 1 genre? They're all hybrids these days taking from one another.

    The Division is many things like 3rd person, open world, narrative driven but at its core it shares two major factors. Shooter & RPG.

    The RPG elements most prominent excluding the actual "Role Playing" is the loot and character building system followed by skill trees, bosses, treasure chests etc... Even for a shooter your damage is based on your build. Shooters are much simpler and generally first person.

    it's predominantly an RPG.
