Deflects need to punish more. They have stricter timings than parries and do not give as much reward (deflect light vs stamina drain parry while breaking a chain and allowing a follow-up attack). Deflects could at least interrupt chains and at best, comparing to non-assassin characters, either knock an opponent down (like Lawbringer's and Valkyrie's easy to use moves that ground an opponent) or at least stun, allowing a heavy to follow.
I wholeheartedly agree. Since this is the only special move the Orochi can perform, it either needs to be more punishing when done, or become easier to use. This is the signature move of this Hero, yet I so rarely see it, or even able to perform it. It was much easier during the Alpha gameplay, but changing its mechanics makes it more of a risk than a benefit.
Deflect is fine
Assassins don't need any more free damage.
Deflect is intended to be used in specific situations when you anticipate a move. It is safe than a parry because of the inherent mobility and invincibility frames of dodge. The trade off is less reward.
If you don't think that deflect is "worth it" over a parry... start parrying.
Most assassins I see use the crutch of dodging and don't even know how to block let alone parry and then they come on here and QQ
Actually in Higher level of play you rarely see an Orochi try to deflect on purpose, They'd rather Parry since it leads into a free guardbreak into a heavy attack. They use the deflect if they are in a tough positon and manage to react in time for the deflect. Why?? would you ask, its simple, A deflect can only be followed up by a Light Attack since the Heavy attack version of it is so slow that it lets the opponent either dodge it or light attack resulting in a fail for you. This issues makes the Deflect mechanics be almost worthless on an Orochi. At least Berserker gets a free GB (without having to press anything) and the PK gets a nice bleed effect. So yes Parrying is more effective and less risky, Also if you get baited into a failed parry you can cancel that failed parry (Since its an Heavy Attack), if you get baited and you dodge, you are screwed.
I actually like this mechanics and I also believe it shouldn't be under-used like it is right now.
The only real benefit of Deflect... Is the option select aspect (which is meaningless in high level play). The idea is that "if you fail to time it" you can still dodge.
In high level play, if you deflect, you do it correctly. Parrying is easier AND safer AND punishes more like the thread suggested, there's zero mathematical benefit to Orochi Deflecting.
It's not safer than a parry because if you leave the parry too late you block the attack, if you leave the deflect too late you eat the attack, and if you're too early on some side and all top attacks you get hit too. I'm not saying assassins need more more free damage, it's just deflect as a mechanic is completely underwhelming when compared to the alternatives. There's plenty of things more worthy of changing but it would be nice if it became useful in some way - it may be that parry is the problem right now given how high level players are saying defence in general is too strong right now.Originally Posted by Peligrad Go to original post
