I Just finished playing a few hours of For Honor and I'm loving it, but I have a huge issue: I tried connecting an Xbox One controller to my PC to play the game and I noticed that when in guard mode, heavy attacks don't work.
I tried everything, I tried restarting the game, changing controllers, reconnecting controllers, and trying to heavy attack while not in guard mode, and that's the crazy part; Heavy attacks do not work, but only while in guard mode, while out of guard mode, it works just fine.
Also, when you try doing a heavy attack in guard mode, an audio cue and a visual cue show up. The enemy combatant glows all white while you try to heavy attack and your character does no animation of any kind.
This breaks the game for me, as I prefer to play the game with a controller and not kb/m.
Has anyone else run into this problem? What can be done to fix it?

its like it continually changes focus, im just sat spinning around trying my hardest to attack someone and all i can do is give them a little poke, deeply frustrating

I have the same problem playing on PC with my Xbox Elite and Xbox 360 Controller. Both via USB.
Yesterday and the day before everything worked fine. Today it came out of nowhere while I played an online match. In the beta sometimes it worked, sometimes I had the same problem.
If I disconnect and reconnect the controller while I am in a match, there is a chance it will work again for a differnt amount of time ^^ Not playable the way it is...
They are not set up as steam controllers in Big Picture Mode.
Drivers are up to date.
Nothing else is conneceted to the USB ports.

I am getting the same issue with XBox 360 controller via USB. It worked fine earlier today but now it's consistently not working. Oddly, when I start the game while it does register the controller not all the buttons work. If I unplug the controller and plug it back in, the only thing that stops working is the combination of guard mode + heavy. It works when I am not in guard mode. This tells me it's a bug in the game and not with the controller, as it doesn't make sense for the game to register a button in one case and not in another.

Honestly i haven't problem like that. I have played betas with 360 controller and launch with 1 controller.
Check if you have 360 drivers installed while using 1 controller due to conflict between them (e.g. unable to proper map the pad, that mean if you press guard mode nothing happen)
In other and there are some bugs related to pad on pc, like m/k "conflict" with pad or with background software (like uplay/steam), i think that is related to fullscreen not right setting up and pc/game doesnt right recognize if you are using m/k or pad.
You have to alt+tab and click on for honor windows to fix (some times doesnt work)
And at last be sure you haven't any custom pad mapping by legacy_users_pad.ini(didnt remember the right name), cause that is broken and make your pad unstable.
