so, like the title says, my buddy pre-ordered the deluxe version and wants to upgrade to gold. the caveat is that he has slow internet and doesn't want to lose his pre-load. is this possible?

Try get reimbursed through steam, assuming he hasn't played for more than 2 hours . Other than that, he can just wait for the season pass stuff to be released and buy it then.

yeah, reimbursement isn't really an option due to slow internet. it took him like 3 days to pre-load it. game comes out in an hour and a half. lol. he tried live chatting ubi support and apparently the guy wasn't the most helpful or intelligent. looks like waiting and buying the season pass is the only option right now. unless ubi will let him upgrade post-release.
