PSA: Buying Steel with CASH does NOT give you any sort of an advantage.
People posting the nonsense that buying steel gives you an advantage have NOT played the game enough to understand anything about it. Here's some information for people that want the ACTUAL facts regarding how purchasing steel will function.
1. You cannot buy high level gear. PERIOD.
2. You can ONLY buy crates which give you random gear drops for that one character.
3. The drops are based on your Reputation level on that one character. *Reputation 0, level 1-6 gear (does basically nothing, all for looks really). *Reputation 1, (takes a good 10 to 15 hours of gameplay to hit) level 7-12. *Reputation 3, (takes a good 40+ hours to get to), level 13-18'ish. And so on.
4. There is matchmaking. The game tries to match you with players at similar rep levels. If someone buys as much gear as possible at say, reputation 1, they might have a total gear level of like 42'ish. they will get in matches against others with similar.
5. Gear ONLY COUNTS in 4v4 modes. It doesn't do anything 2v2's and 1v1's which is where the real competitive scene happens.
6. You get MORE THAN ENOUGH steel from leveling up (because you have to play matches and do dailies etc... to level) to fully max out your gear level for every tier anyway!!
TLDR: Buying steel is a waste of money. It doesn't do anything to make you OP because gear doesn't make you OP anyway. It's almost a placebo. Also, not really important but, the Mythic Gear you can buy with steel is just a cosmetic outfit. It has no stats. It's just for looks.
My Credentials: 90 hours of gameplay through all 3 betas. 70 hours combined for the last two. Reputation 3 and max gear in the last one.
