Over my course of playing the beta, I have noticed a lot of player gravitate towards the assassin class characters; and by gravitate I mean a good 75% of the people I play against are using Orochi or Peacekeeper. I feel as though a major part of this is not because the characters are inherently over-powered (a part of this is also a lag issue) is because their dodges have no stamina cost, and because dodging uses invincibility frames, a skilled player can dodge almost any attack for as long as they please. Because there is no stamina costs from their dodging and they don't have to risk blocking, they can use all of their stamina purely for attacks, and because they are fast characters their basic attacks do not consume a large amount of stamina, and when they finally do run low on stamina they can just dodge away then sprint until their stamina comes back. I understand that a guard break can take them out of their dodges, but due to their kit and the generally poor lag inherent to the game, most of the time they dodge into an attack which will cancel out the guard break attempt. If their is a stamina penalty to dodging and sprinting however, it will force them to learn how to block or risk overexerting themselves and becomeing unable to escape, making the characters more skill-based and ever so slightly less appealing, which will hopefully allow some diversity to come into this game, because at the moment it feels like there is a very high assassin meta,and I'd like to fight against different characters. My only worry though is that if the stamina penalties are too high, then they will become worthless, and the vanguard class will suffer as well, turning the game towards the shield characters like Conquerors and Warlords. I think a good amount would be 15% for Assassin's, 20% for vanguards, and 30% for Conqueror and Warlord.
no. peacekeeper is already one of the best classes in the game right now. assassins shouldn't have additional mobility for free. just like how the shield characters don't have better defenses for free. if i use all guard with warlord now (after that painful stamina cost nerf) it literally brings me down about a 5-6th of my stamina bar. dodging should be the same way. there needs to be cost of use.
I think the reason the devs made dodge free for Assassins is because they have very low armor, so they take fewer hits to kill than a non-Assassin class. The reason there's a stamina cost for AllGuard for the shield classes is because of how overwhelmingly overpowered the ability is. It blocks 100% of attacks from all directions for its duration. Dodge only avoids damage if it is timed correctly. Peacekeepers have abilities that can only be used after a deflect (IIRC, don't play them a lot), and two of the Orochi's abilities require a deflect. Adding a stamina cost to dodge for Assassin classes would only leave people not playing them at all, so those players would just switch to one of the classes that has super cheese (like Conqueror) and use the same three moves over and over until you die. Then people would complain about that until the nerf hammer comes down. Those players would then switch to another class and use their cheese. If you have trouble against a class, start a 1v1 AI duel against them to learn their visual cues and timing until you can take out a level three AI in your sleep. I have no trouble hitting Assassin classes (and I main an Orochi). I do have trouble against other classes however, so I always try and fight them whenever I can so I can learn and get better.
I think that if you are running for more than 10 seconds you should start to see a stamina drain. This would help with situations where one guy is just running away from the entire team as the last person.
I don't want to see anything overly strict applied to this though, as it isn't a big issue and messing with it overly could have some very large repercussions.

Dodging has no invulnerability frames? Are you high or something? Dodging is literally the only defense against shield users. The only assumption that I can make is that you were playing against low skill levels. Any high level player battles consist of nothing but parrying, guard break cancels, and utilizing character bash maneuvers/ dodge mechanics. I don't know if you realized or perhaps you didn't play enough, but the game's META is hyper-defense.
I've fought against some really really good shield users who've opened my eyes to some inherent faults with their design. A prime example being the speedy recovery of the conqueror after shield charges allowing him to block and even parry whilst still in his recover animation. This makes dodge strikes worthless against any competent player with half a brain and his finger on guard break. Shield users atm are at the pinnacle of power. Don't get me wrong, assassin's are strong too but require more skill, feinting, parrying, dodging.
At the moment I have 4-5 swings in me on a good day before I'm stamina depleted. In all honesty though, if you're in a fight with a good player it will consist of either you getting destroyed because you're not parrying and dodging and you're letting them by hyper-aggressive or they realize that you're good enough to be a threat and will play turtle boy rock formation mode until they either see an opening or you actually strike at them allowing them to punish you for your transgressions.
If anything there should be a more balanced dynamic in regards to defensive vs offensive gameplay. Which I know is ambiguous to say the least and much easier said than done but I've yet to see anything that I can definitively point to and say this... this is what is causing an imbalance in the player vs player combat. All I've seen so far is a score of concepts and mechanics that need reworking and tweaking in order to push players into expanding their fighting styles and encouraging more variety in gameplay. Whether its through assassin spamming or shield spamming. All I can say is.... it was much better than the viking spam :P
