Parrying and deflecting make defense far too rewarding

I'm not opposed to being rewarded for a good defense, but I believe that reward should come in the form of not taking damage. Currently, you get to not take damage AND deal a massive amount of unavoidable damage for a good defense... and to that I am opposed.

Parrying and deflecting should allow the defender an opportunity to switch to the offensive. This should NOT mean getting free damage. It should mean stunning your opponent or depleting their stamina enough that they have no choice but to defend themselves because they wouldn't have time to attack before they got attacked.

I know this isn't perceived as a big problem to all players. To a lot of players, it never will be, because they won't be playing in games where anyone parries or deflects much. However, at higher levels of play I perceive this as a very big problem and it's not healthy for the game in a competitive sense.

There is not a single offensive option or attack that is guaranteed damage. Everything can be blocked, parried or dodged. I think that's good design. Parrying and deflecting giving free, unavoidable damage is bad design. That is the single biggest flaw with the art of battle and I really hope it's addressed sooner than later.

yeah i,ve seen atlest 5 games in my 2 hours of play so far that where a guy with a shield is goin 1v3 and blocking 100% of all attacks then wins with ease i just quit in a rage cuz i had a team that was so good at blocking we got 0 kills the whole match died like 5 times and the match was over in like 3 mins couldnt play couldnt counter there was zero chance of even playing the game massive massive flaw

    get ready for shield meta

yeah parry is a bit too strong, anytime you parry u drain alot of their stamina and get a free guard break which is a free attack which varies depending on what class u are but its like 1 bar or more of damage every time for 100% free, and parrying isnt even that hard really,

Copy pasted from a thread I created, though like this one apparently not alot of people are at the level where they can reliably parry, so they dont see this being a problem.

Every time I fight another slow character is always boils down to a parry match until we are out of stamina, followed by a GB match until someone misses one then gets thrown to the floor and eats a heavy.

Yes feints go a long way in baiting someone into using a parry into nothing, but when in close range its extremely risky, regardless the point still remains that you shouldn't lose 50% of your stamina for getting parried, thats ridiculous.

Unsure why there is such a reward for parrying, the fact you arent taking damage and are getting a guaranteed hit afterwards should be reward enough.

Yep, and this is only beta where people have a few days of practice. The skill ceiling on defensive play is much higher than offensive play. You can only mix up in so many ways using feints, but there's really no limit on how quick you can become in your reaction time defensively. The best players will never get guard broken and they'll rarely miss chances to parry. Even if you do manage to bait out a parry, you can FEINT the heavy attack used to parry so that it remains a safe and nonpunishable option. All you have to do is spam E right as you go for the parry to make sure you revert back into defensive mode instead of getting baited into an attack.

Great, another person who finally understands the cancerous hyper-defensive meta. You need to fix it, ubi. Remove the ability to get a free guard break after parry, allow it to be guard-broken. Remove shield users completely until you fix their ability to spam unblockable, undodgeable guard breaks.

Exactly. It really feels like the game wasn't designed for proper 1on1s.

Yep. Game META is hyper-defense at the moment with no drawbacks.
