Someone playing on the Uplay client tried to invite me while I'm playing on steam. The invite comes through Uplay and when you accept, it tried to process this through uplay and try to open the game through Uplay even though its open in Steam and running.

Seems you have to have Uplay overlay on and working along with that person on your Uplay friends list. It does not work across separate networks.
