What is the best controller for the PC??

Hi all, I am not really happy with the PC controls and feel that a controller gives a competitive advantage against someone playing on a PC (e.g. parry's and blocks are better with controller) I was thinking to get a controller for my PC and map out the buttons etc. Can anyone advise my what the best controller for PC would be?

    Many thanks

If you"ll play FH via steam: Steam Controller.
If not: Xbox-controller. The ELITE one may give you an advantage via the backpaddles and it's customizability.

I would agree that Xbox Elite Controller is a Rolls-Royce among controllers. Bear in mind however that not only it's expensive AF, it also requires a separate $20 ****le for wireless connection and its paddles are only configurable in Windows 10.

Steam Controller seemed to have some issues during the beta that Ubi promised to solve.

The good old Xbox 360 controller (wired or wireless) is a good budget choice for PC gaming.

If you plan on remapping your controls know that For Honor betas did not have rebindable controllers and we have no information if this feature will be available in the full game. There are some workarounds for this issue (using external software, editing .ini files) that may or may not end up being blocked by the anti-cheat software.

All in all the controller seems better than m+k in FH. But the default gamepad button layout has it's own issues (too many actions under right thumb, L1 and L2 used for less-important functions). I just wish we'll get fully rebindable controls.

Hey Angier, I was actually looking at the Xbox Elite as well as the Razor Wildcat and Steam controller but most reviews suggest that the Elite is a better controller.

Hey Jan I was looking at the Steam as well and heard about all the issues here in the forum. You know that was one of the main reason I was planning on getting a controller due to the problems with M&K but I really wanted to re-map and rebind the keys. I did not know that we cannot do this in For Honor. DAM!!!!! I may put off getting the controller now until I find out if we can do this at all. That would be a great How to information thread if your able to do a work around for re-mapping the buttons.

    Thanks guys

CritBull - all 3 controllers you've been looking at (Xbox One Elite, Razer Wildcat, Steam Controller) have additional back buttons/paddles that can be configured in their dedicated software (Xbox Elite only in Win 10 though). They actually have all their buttons rebindable - but the problem with that is that it screws up menu controls in-game. That's a clear advantage of having back buttons/paddles.

For all the other plebs that don't own such fancy controllers I think this is the most promising solution. I haven't checked it during the closed beta, but I will try this and a couple other methods during the open beta. And I'm planning to ***** about it a lot in the forums.

Like I said - in-game rebindable controls would save us so much hassle.

Hi Jan wow thanks for the information. I am leaning towards the Xbox Elite now with the paddles as Microsoft is having a special in Australia at the moment where we can pick one up for about $80 US (normally they are about $150-$199 US). If that is the case regarding the in game menus I could just bind the paddles and leave everything else standard for the game menus.

Once you have been able to do some testing Jan in Open Beta, would you have some time to write back here in this thread and let us know how things went? Even if you want to provide a link to your main thread. I did hear (dont know how true this is?) that if we do rebind any buttons it will be picked up by the anti-cheat software and wont work? Hope this is not true, have you heard this? Thanks very much for the information you have provided, its been very helpful.

I hope Ubisoft will just give us some better rebinding options if its not too late before release but I think it maybe with all the other requests people are making. One can only hope I guess they may make some adjustments down the track. Thanks again pal!

I will definitely test it during the OB. I haven't gotten to it during the CB - played it all with default binds (with an old X360 wireless BTW).

    Four methods I know/researched/read/thought about:

    1. Having a fancy controller with backbuttons/paddles and a dedicated software for rebinding. Binding the backbuttons to whatever you like and leaving everything else vanilla lets you move around the menus without problems. Note that I read somewhere that Logitech Gaming Software used by Logitech controllers may be blocked by Easy Anti Cheat.

    2. Editing the legacygamepads.ini file. This seems like a Ubi-supported method for binding a non-standard controller, so it shouldn't be blocked by anti-cheat software. Screws up your menu controls. Also, from what I see, you can't bind the central silver 'Guide' button on an Xbox controller.

    3. Any controller emulator that works by editing XInput1_3.dll (such as X360ce or XInputPlus) file seems to be picked up by Easy Anti Cheat. They also screw up your menu controls, but are able to bind the central button.

    4. One thing I haven't seen researched is using a software that binds keyboard presses to controller buttons (Joy2Key, Keysticks). Not sure how they work, but if they don't edit Xinput file they may pass EAC.

Anyway I'm investigating this matter pretty extensively as I found the default controls a bit lacking. I will keep posting once I know more.

I think it may be option 1 for me if that is the case. I did look into the editing software (X360ce in Option 3) but did not pursue it further as I heard it did not work because of the Anti-cheat, although I did not try it for myself so dont really know for sure. Sounds like options 1, 2 and 4 may hold more success and hopefully Ubisoft may help out as well in a future patch. Look forward to hearing about what you find out. Sounds like your way more experienced at all this then me anyways and have already provided great advice for which I am thankful. Good luck and keep us posted for sure!

I also think that, when I was looking on the file some days ago because of nVidia Shield controller, I saw there is a "complete" guide on how to map your controller and even how to let the game recognize your controller.

Anyway it is beta still and maybe on live there will be better support for controllers of other brands.

Hey Kitten, where did you find the "complete guide"? Could you supply a link? Well I decided to splurge out and but the Xbox one Elite controlled should be here (maybe) in time for the Open beta.
