I played For Honor during the alpha using my steam controller and it worked really well! I pre-ordered on Steam after the technical test was over because I really enjoy games that play well with my steam controller and I was looking forward to the game's release very much.
After installing the beta though, my steam controller no longer works. I wasted a couple hours messing with it and reading up on the problem and possible solutions. Apparently the "Easy Anti Cheat" application now being used by For Honor and other major Ubisoft releases recognizes the steam controller as a cheat device?! I tried a few of the suggestions to get it working but to no avail and just uninstalled the beta. If I messed with it long enough, I could probably get it to work in some manner one way or another, but by then the beta would be nearly over anyways.
Steam controller support might not be a big deal to everyone, but it is to me. This beta experience has helped me come to my senses. $60 is way too much to ask for a product with the full "Ubisoft experience". I have requested a refund on my pre-order.
I'm with you, I'd rather be playing with the Steam Controller. I'm pretty confident that it'll be back by launch though:

That thread was originally supposed to be official instructions to run with the steam controller, and was updated late on Friday to "it's broken we're working on it". There may not be time during the work week for them to fix it before the beta ends, but I'm expecting it back by launch.
You can definitely use the steam controller with it, but it requires a bit of an unpleasant workaround. Go grab GLOSC. If you want to run the game in window or borderless mode you will have to disable overlay (top option in glosc), and since it's a uplay game you'll have to uncheck "close shortcut" at the bottom. Launching the game through anything but uplay will require some extra commands as well.
All this having been said I really wish ubisoft would just straight out support the steam controller. It's idiotic to require a third party application from an unknown software programmer to use one of the most common gaming accessories on steam, and in a game like this controller is really a must have to enjoy the game.
I didn't have any luck with glosc - every time I tried, the controller would work but it wouldn't let my past the "press any key" screen without "content servers unavailable" :|
