It's a stylistic choice, I made a thread to the same effect during the alpha. I'd rather have more realistically proportioned longswords.
This game isn't about realism, It's about having fun. You've got vikings, samurai and knights fighting in one battle, you've got explosive rocks spreading fire, launched from catapults directly onto your oponents you spot with your finger so your medieval artillery can somehow blast them off earth with precision. And you argue about that vikings should've not have horned helmets. Dude, we all know that ain't true but It looks cool and that's what It counts. Then you've got those big swords so you feel strong, you're heavy armored because you feel invincible, you even get your own weak minionlings to kill on the battlefield so even if you don't stand off the rest players in the lobby you can still enjoy the game and have fun. You're ment to be super muscular champion, insuperable hero! I'm not an expert so thick swords don't ruin my mood as long as there is unique gameplay attached to it, and in this case we have art of battle.
In case you have no time to read: fun and gameplay > realism and graphical concepts
Once again, if it's all in the name of "looking cool" then why is the Warden the only one with a giant fantasy sword?Originally Posted by RaV-TK Go to original post
Keep in mind, the overall shape, size, length, width and general visuals of the Warden's sword are all 100% great. In fact they're some of the best looking longswords I've ever seen in a video game! Except for the weird, overly thick and fat blade.
It doesn't look like a sharp blade, it looks like a big metal club. And if it was a metal club, that'd make sense. But seeing as this thing is apparently sharp enough to rip through iron plate armour, having it literally the thickness of a cinderblock doesn't exactly make sense.
And I cannot stress this enough: None of the other characters have weapons like this!
All of the other weapons in the game look far, far closer to their real life counterparts than the Warden's foam LARP sword. It's just the Warden who gets the weirdly proportioned thick-stick deal, and it looks both silly and out of place.
I know "what looks good" is generally subjective, but I fail to see why having a big fat metal club and calling a "blade" is preferable to having something that actually looks like a, y'know, blade.
Perhaps the one that made that 3d model got it that big and it turned out it works better than thin version of it. Stop calling it a metal club as clubs don't have any blades (except in some rare cases and scenarios) there is no such thing as halfclubbing right :P? If it isnt changed by the release date then it was intented because it simply fits warden and his animations.Originally Posted by Veerdin-Wraith Go to original post
Except that the 3D model of the longsword used in the original announcement trailer, as well as the one in the pre-alpha gameplay demo seem to have more accurate proportions. The thicker sword is a recent change, and a stupid one.Originally Posted by RaV-TK Go to original post
As for "matching the Warden's animations", the change I'm asking for shouldn't alter the animations at all: To clarify, I'm asking only that the thickness (not the width) of the blade be made more narrow and possibly given a distal taper, so that it - like all the other weapons in the game - looks like what it is.
Until then, I'll call it what it is, which is a big metal club.
