This is the purpose of betas, for problems like this to happen and get fixed before full release.

I had the same issue, and was able to fix it by doing the following:
    - Close the game
    - Verify files.
    - Close Uplay
    - Open up task manager and kill any processes related to uplay
    - Fire up Uplay and start the game

Some of the Uplay processes appeared to be hung and I'm pretty sure killing those is what fixed it.

    Basically what Kiwi said,

Although, I wouldn't go as far as saying that they broke the "Beta" because you're having an issue. Can happen with any game.

It's the purpose of a true beta, and a true beta this is not.

They don't even have a month until launch. If what we're playing is the most current build of the game, you can bet your firstborn that a lot of these problems will not have changed an iota come the 14th. A beta meant to make changes and improve the game happens months before the game is due because making those fixes takes time, and not an insignificant amount of it. This is a glorified demo.

Seriously, you've never wondered why demos went extinct? Because they can call them betas and get away with murder because "is just beta, will be fix".
