The Japanese didn't have the materials OR the methods to make even semi-reasonable steel, and never actually improved or evolved over the entire time the katana was in use.

Steel...FOUND...in the era? Oh, 1, you don't 'find' steel, you make it. 2, Japanese steel before modern time was ALWAYS impure. Traditionally made steel(tatara-made) TODAY is utterly crap.

Cool! So, Masamune invented a new type of sword never before or since seen in history, where you grip the pommel? Particularly interesting, considering that Japanese swords don't HAVE pommels. This lack of knowledge of the very most basic of terminology isn't really doing you any favors, you know...

Perhaps to the Japanese. Do note that what the Japanese thought were 'perfect' blades weren't that in, really, any other part of the world.
The katana is an interesting sword, from a historical as well as socio-political context. And, it's not, per se, a BAD sword. But neither is it a magical lightsaber forged by hermit monks under the light of the full moon in a remote mountain hide-away with the help of spirits, gods and elementals. So, please don't perpetuate the nonsense.
Oh, and as noted, if you're making a game relying strongly on swords and their use? Please learn the terminology and use it properly.
