Many games get a follow up relatively quickly, especially if, as happened with The Division, sales of the first game were good.
Ubisoft have a reputation for rinsing every last penny from a franchise, and so it would be strange in my eyes if they weren't already demanding a sequel, either from Massive/Red Storm or a new developer.
Would it be better, considering how many bugs and exploits still exist, not to mention the numerous ones fixed since release, the untold issues with lag, the constant arguing over the DZ, and the general feeling that the story needs to be continued and the world explored in more detail, not to draw a line under The Division and make a sequel?
A better game in every way, taking all the best aspects, the most popular game mechanics, the structure and tone, from the first one and improving the things that haven't worked.
Priority has to be to ensure that p.c players never have to accept the debacle that is the DZ on their system.
The fact anyone still plays on p.c is a testament to the quality of the game and their immense patience.
Console, where I play (ps4), hasn't had to endure this ruinous nonsense, but has had some issues more related to frame rates etc...which could and should be sorted too.
The question of whether to stay in NYC, to stay in the winter months, to keep the factions etc...would be a choice for the developers I guess.
I personally don't think that the snow is essential to the game.
Yes, it's a thematic choice and I like it, but it isn't vital to the future of the game.
I feel that the factions have potential as story vehicles and are underused. Maybe an extra faction wouldn't hurt, and certainly some new dialogue and a different character model for the existing NPC wouldn't hurt either.
As for New York, well it's a vast city that we have barely scatched the surface of.
What about the rest of Manhattan?
The other boroughs?
What about some verticality?
It has all these huge skyscrapers and they aren't utilised.
Fighting from level to level, using the ropes to ascend elevator shafts, even adding some new mechanics like parachuting or helicopter pick ups with mounted weaponry...not original, but it would add some much needed variety, at least as far as the single player story.
Refinement of the DZ is important, and keeping rogues should be part of it if it is possible to still balance the game properly.
Anyway, I'd be interested to see if people think a sequel is a must to make the game we should have gotten the first time, or if it would be better to focus on improving and expanding the current game, or maybe you don't want to leave this game world and think everything is fine as it is?
My priorities, either in a sequel or any new content, would be;
1) Continue the story and add some variety to missions
2) Expand the BoO
3) Fix the DZ or offer a separate multiplayer mode for proper, skill based PvP
4) Open up exploration of the wider city
5) Add new character models and dialogue for existing NPCs
No.... I would rather have expansions that fix this game than another full price game.
The Division's story is forgettable at best, there characters are forgettable, Your avatar doesnt even talk thats how crappy the story is
Could The Division dona Titan Fall type 180? Maybe. But it will probably be a Watch Dogs 2 type thing.
I think you are right about the story and characters.Originally Posted by S3anS3an Go to original post
But that's more of a missed opportunity than any inherent flaw in the story.
It should, and still could, reach its potential.
But it needs some bold, imaginative, clear thinking and the question is whether;
A) This team of developers have the desire or ability.
B) It would be better with the blank slate that a sequel could provide.
The problem with this game is that parts of the universe contradict each other. They want realism in the story but everyone are bullet sponges.Originally Posted by RhinoCharging00 Go to original post
I would always like to see a clean slate but not with The Division universe.
What needs to happen is a Division type mechanic in the Wild West or something. A dark zone would make more sense set in that type of universe.
Nope, start again from scratch, the net code is trash hence 3rd party applications able to cheat on the client side. They'll never ever be able to fix that. I think they should move it forward to near future to a different location, London. They need to market as a shooter/mmo and define other areas other than just dps, i want skills to make a difference if i accept i can't do conventional dps.
I don't know about a new location.Originally Posted by teado25 Go to original post
I still think we've barely explored New York, and it has a lot more to offer...plus, it would remain consistent to the original game if we are talking about the sequel.
You are right, of course, about the client side fiasco, and that should be one of their main priorities and also is one of the main reasons it might be worth starting over with a new game.
So, if you don't know, they actually went to New York to do research on the place. Buildings, streets,, etc. If you don't actually look at the game, and don't realize how incredibly detailed this game is, you would assume they could spit out another game next year, despite this game taking 3 upon its announcement.Originally Posted by teado25 Go to original post
So, if you want them to stop with this game and run to make a new one, good luck with that request, especially from scratch.
If they do decide to do a sequel, which lets be honest is a nailed on certainty, for the love of all thats holy, don't let massive do it...
Its been one calamity to the next, one step forwards, two steps back has never been so apt.
Superb concept, but it could have been executed so much better.
Ditto. If they abandon this game as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if the sequel couldn't make ends meet.Originally Posted by fixer7267 Go to original post
