Hello there, fellow warriors!
I was a little bit disappointed about the december tech-test only beeing available for pc gamers but after sacrificing several captured foes to the gods i am slowly getting over it.
Now i am hungry for new info.
As someone focusing most on the duel-mode and brawl, i was paying little attention to any news concerning skirmish. Now that there is a bunch of new gameplay on youtube, i did. And my first reaction is mostly negative. I will tell you why and i would be grateful if some experienced testers could share their opinions (if they are allowed to) and hush my fears:
While all of the other gamemodes fill their roles well, skirmish seems to be totally useless. The games start of with potentially cool 1vs1 situations, but in almost none of the vids i watched players did actually pick them. Instead they ran away, to gang up with a team mate and then buttonmash someone to death. I wouldnt start a thread only to complain about ganking if this would be about the dominion mode. In Dominion, we have a lot of reason to believe that 1v1 or 2v2 scenarios might become the norm once people figure the game out. That is because of the several map points that each team has to control, spreading the players across the map and making ganging up a strategy that puts you into disadvantage. Problem is, in skirmish i cant see any reason for not doing so.
Quite the opposite: Not ganging up in skirmish puts you into disadvantage. What is the reason to stand and duel, if you cannot be sure that the other team is ganging up and 3 enemies are about to crash your fight any moment. The only way to be save is either really good communication or ganging up yourself.
The problem might be amplified by the fact that these videos only show button mashing super-noobs who still have fun chaotically running around and trying to land a heavy hit. The troublesome factor, however, is that a good player does not have any other options either than kill the opponent very fast and then gang up or to immediatelly gang up. Which puts every character with slower sprinting speed at a disadvantage because he does not have the runaway opion and can only hope that there is no mob rolling in while he tries to kill the faster charakter he cannot run away from.
Once you are ganged up you might be save from not getting into an unfair situation but you are not going to have much fun, either. Because now you are in the "awsome" situation of a 4vs4 cluster****. I can see that game working perfectly in 2vs2 situations, because 2 characters cannot efficiently spam one opponent down while there is a 4th character, thanks to the blocking mechanic. I guess in rare situations were there is enough space a 3vs3 could sometimes work but most of the time that would already result in situations were most of the damage is done by lack of orientation or just because one character is overwhelmed because of the positioning of the characters and friendly fire spoiling whatever quality combat might still be possible. 4vs4 will obviously just be hacking and hoping the opponent falling faster than your teammates.
The only fix i could think of would forcing the players to duel their first opponent. Afterwards a door could open and the suvivors can have a 2v2.
