Hey Guys!
I was just watching some of the footage from the most recent technical test, really liking the three new additions.
One thing I noticed in a lot of game play, which I've also seen in previous footage from earlier this year, is the absolute button mashing that goes on whenever there is more than a 1 v 1 going on. This is mostly in fights where there is a dis-advantage for one side, often seen near the end of matches. The last guy standing gets hacked and slashed by a group of enemies.
We have the rage mechanic, which helps these last man standing players to have a chance at winning, but I've noticed that even with the rage mechanic the enemy group of players will always just spam attacks again, and again, and again. The solo player might get one or two hits in, maybe even kill an enemy if they are low, but its not a matter of skill, or smarts, or reaction speed, it's just hacking and slashing.
The solo combat is great, 1 v 1's look so awesome. How can we make these last stand fights feel more like meaningful combat?
Introduce a new feature to the rage mechanic, increased friendly damage.
If we make it so that hitting a player deals the same damage to friendlies as it does to enemies (While someone is in rage mode), we can turn these last stands into meaningful combat. The group of players can decide to either let one player take a solo fight, or they can surround the solo enemy from different directions, taking care with each of their swings, timing them and aiming them so as to not hit allies, which leaves much more counter play available to skilled solo players. Or take the risk of killing your allies with a frenzied rush of hacking and slashing, which if the solo enemy successfully blocks enough off will mean that some of your grouped allies will die and the match all of a sudden swings into much more of an intense and suspenseful ending.
Please post any thoughts, questions, or problems you have around this idea.
The more we discuss this idea the more likely it will be noticed.
Cheers
