If graphics are being upadtaed, here is an idea I think would be really cool so I am throwing it out: vilsible humans running around on the ships and ground (if it's already out there sorry, didn't see it from what I read and I don't have time to read the entire forum). It would pobably up the system req. a lot, so it should be an option such as "draw humans".

It would be really cool to be able to fly close to ships and see people running around manning the AA guns on and working on the bridge and refueling and arming the planes on the deck and trying to put out fires after bombs go off.

When ships would start to sink, you could watch as lots of them made their way to life rafts or just jumped into the ocean. If you were feeling very evil, you could even strafe the life boats and sink them and strafe the swimmers.

All the humans on the ship could take daamge so say you make a low lvel strafing run on a ship and killed the humans at an AA gun. That, that gun would go out of operation until some other people ran over to it unless the gun itself was taken out, which should also be put in.

Also, with lots of ships going into the game (I assume), it would be cool (some would say necessary) to have very detailed damage modeling of the ships. I want to see fires where my bombs hit (if a fire would have started in real life, if not then at least damage and scortch marks on the ship), perhaps some secondary explosions if an ammo cache is bombed.

Huge amounts of billowing smoke (talked about in someone else's post) would be cool to, although smoke levels should be scalable as to not over tax low end systems. Oil trails from ships could be put into effect to if there was a fuel leak (perhaps a mission where you get to the target area of a damaged ship, but cant find it, but you do see an oil trail so you follow that to the limping ship).

This post was mainly to put out the idea of visible humans running around ont he ships. this idea could be extended to ground armies and bases as well.

In BoB, I think there should definitely be humans running around. I don't know how much of a graphics hit this would create, but an older helicopter game named "Hind" had them and that game ran very well on mid level systems of the time.

    Comments and discussion are welcome...

I think it would greatly enhance the immersiveness of this sim as well as make it seem more alive. This seems like it'd be a difficult proposition to fulfill, but I think it'd be worth it. I'm just tired of the "ghost town" airfields of FB.

And to the original poster, sorry - we won't have men running on our ships.

Regarding smoke and more complex damage model, there's a major question of FPS. Smoke and fire eat more of it than anything else in the game. So we either have to build considerably lower-poly ships, or we just can't improve those aspects that much just yet unfortunately.

Realistic pretty smoke is right up there on top of my wishlist, but unfortunately with today's hardware and the amount of all the other stuff going on in the game code, we just can't do it yet.

    Funny post with the Trump.

That is too bad . What about just the life rafts? Have them lower when a ship starts to go down.

What ever the case, I'm sure the game will be great. The pacific has always been my favorite and carriers are what I have always wanted from the beginning. Can't wait for sink the carrier Multi-Player sessions.

Concerning smoke, I realize that it does cause frame rate hits b/c I get em when I start my engine from the f8 view and start moving and I am zoomed into the dust cloud.

A way to combat that could be allowing various levels of smoke detail...low, medium, high... you get the picture. Same with fire.

The thing with creating little life rafts, we might potentially do it but then they'll look really silly just sitting in the water I think. We absolutely can't make them move anywhere, as we absolutely cannot spawn moving objects and dynamically create waypoints for them during the course of one mission.

Which reminds me by the way of a story a P-38 pilot told me. They came accross some troop transports just a few hundred yards off shore and quicly destroyed them. Then his whole squadron took turns strafing the men in the water as they were trying to swim to safety until they all ran out of ammunition. He says he could see the red spot in the water for miles as they were flying away.

Regarding smoke and fire, unfortunately we're already familiar with a concept of LODs - so all my comments on this already assume that we'll be using them for these effects.

Wouldn't the guys in the rafts just wait for a hypothetical rescue? That wouldn't require them to move. Which brings me back to the PBY issue....ah...nevermind.

Whilst we talk peaple, I,d like to see an improvement of the bail out animation, how about the guy going over the side and tumble past you in a ball like you see in the camera gun footage, I really don,t like the current high dive move.Even some random changes to the pose now and then.

Sort of yet that "hey check that out" thing happening.

    Just a thought.

Sorry, the bail out ain't changing. It's just a standard thing used for all positions in all planes. To make them climb over the side, we'd have to program each individual bail-out for each individual crewman in each individual plane, and that's where I'd go shoot myself.

In plain English, this is another one of those things that's not worth the time it takes to implement it in my opinion.
