Hall of Heroes Discussion: Ranked
Greetings!
Here comes another thread about one of the many discussions we've had in our Hall of Heroes discord! Some of you might have already read the thread I started earlier this week which was a discussion about Faction vs Faction. I hope you enoyjed reading it and I hope you'll enjoy this one too. For those who haven't read about the other discussion, I will leave a link on the bottom of this thread. So without further ado, here comes the discussion!
Note: This is all speculations. I have not captured EVERYONES opinions, however I do try to catch what I deem be in the majoritiy. If you feel that something is lacking, don't hesitate to throw in a post with more of your thoughts and opinions, thats exactly what this is about.
On the topic of: Ranked
Question
Being able to prove you're the best is something many players sought-after. Nowadays being able to play a ranked mode and have a ladder to climb is a huge deal for many games and gamers. There is rarely a question IF a game has it but what could be asked is HOW it is going to be played out. That's exactly what i want to bring up today.
-Just how would you like them to set it up?
-What i would love to bring up today would also be things like, should every mode have a ranked mode to it?
-Should the ‘’Solo queue’’ be strict 1 man only or able to team up with a friend?
-Would you like to separate your rank between teaming up and going solo?
Additionally
-How would you like to see your rank? A big number displaying ranked points? (Example: You have 2895, reach 3000 and become ''Gold rank'') Would you perhaps like it to work in a different way?
-Should it come down to whether you win or lose a match? Should your rank depend only on your win/loss ratio or perhaps take a different approach and count more into individual score?
-Should your rank be visible to everyone or should it be invisible? Should you be able to choose?
-Would you like to receive rewards depending on your rank?

Discord Discussion
First thing that popped up was about game modes, much like the recent faction vs faction discussion. When it came to the question WHICH modes should be granted a ranked queue, the majority had their eyes set on duel, brawl and dominion. Some suggested that all of the three different modes deserved a separate ranked queue. Others that the 4v4 modes could for example have a combined rank, perhaps you could be thrown into a random game mode when signing up for a ranked queue which involved a team of 4. It would have you prove you’re the master of every mode. (In my own opinion, both suggestions sounds pretty good, the majority however felt like Elimination and Skirmish might not have too much of a ‘ranked potential’.)
When it came to how they wanted the system to look like, it didn’t matter too much. I brought up three examples from other game. (Battlerite, LoL and CS-Go) Any of the examples seemed to be acceptable. When we talked about seasons there was a good few opinions on the length of the season, some said a year, one person said half a year and made comparison to the game rocket league. ‘’It isn't too short to get anywhere and it isn't too long, so the wait for rewards isn't annoying/boring or the feeling of being rewarded hasn't disappeared.’’.
What did matter a lot was individual score and not so much if you win or lose. Of course, if you were to lose a match you shouldn’t rise in rank but perhaps not fall too much if you were to do really well during the match. Same thing would be applied if you were to just relax and let the other win the match for you, you wouldn’t get much of any points for it. A suggestion for duel ranking that came up was that each character has it’s own rank. You could be a ‘’gold rank’’ with your Warden but only ‘’bronze rank’’ with your Orochi. This also raised a few concerns when it came to balancing things, if the ‘’gold ranked’’ person would jump to another character it wouldn’t be fun for the people he/she would go up against as he/she would have a much better ‘’core’’ to his/her style, concern being that it could ruin the experience for some. (Food for thought, does mercy have a place in a competitive mode?)
When it came to the ranks themselves a suggestion came up about using medieval names for each rank instead of a standard ‘’bronze, silver and gold’’. This could also depend on your faction, so you could as a knight go from some kind of ‘soldier’ rank up to a ‘Lord’ rank. When it came to the visibility of your rank there was several suggestions which pointed towards the GUI. Giving your name a color, different colors on the outlines of your health bar and such. One suggestion i personally liked a lot would be a border around your attacker/defender symbol. Another suggestion was the ring under your enemy would change according to their rank. Whilst it was a very neat topic that you should have ways to show your rank and be able to boast about how good you are, being able to hide your rank was pretty important too. An option to render your rank visible or invisible felt like something essential.
Being rewarded depending on your rank was something obvious. Whilst there is not much to say on the topic, it was widely agreed on that things should be kept purely cosmetic if it were to be any reward regarding gear. Things like GUI, execution mood effects and other kind of effects was much more sought-after.
As a bonus, we talked a little bit about leaderboards and what we would like to see in them. I guess you could say ‘’the usual’’ Kills and deaths, level, w/l ratio and more of the standard stuff. What would also be quite interesting would be able to look up specific characters to see who is really the number one at a certain character.
