"But the current system just feels like a giant waste of time once you’ve gone through it once or twice. You can have a perfect run, or you can die in the first two minutes, and while the former may loot you some caches, you’re not making much progress in the larger game, and any progress you do make never helps you in Survival one bit. I may not be a fan of the Dark Zone, but at least there’s some measure of progress there where it ties in directly with the larger game, and vice versa. But in Survival, it doesn’t matter how many times you play it, each time you boot up an instance, you will always start from square one."
I was GS229 and tier 4 when I loaded up Survival for the first time. I know this doesn't matter, but I'll explain in a bit. My first couple of runs were just feeling out the mode. By my 3rd and 4th run I started progressing enough to where I'd get caches at the end. The caches contained 256 gear. So, my overall GS rose from 229 to 241, where it is now. I'm "progressing" in the larger game outside of Survival by playing Survival and having a lot of fun doing it. I haven't made it to the DZ yet, but I will eventually. I'm not sure if the reviewer from Forbes mean't to say what he did, and maybe I interpreted it wrong, but as long as can get 256 gear by playing it, I'm happy as hell.
I think he doesn't phrase it clearly. I think what he's saying is that with the DZ, any progress you do make, is linked into the main game AND back into the DZ.
With Survival, any progress you make, may benefit you in the main game, but is of no use on your next Survival run.
This is one of the reasons I dislike Survival so much!
Another is the fact that I'm always pitted against other players, even in the PvE mode. Why can't Massive get it into their heads that some of us don't want to compete. Not to mention that it makes zero sense.
IMHO, Survival would make much more sense as a solo player or private group. It would fit that a single agent, or small group of agents was sent out despite the dire conditions, because of the critical nature of the task. It would be you, or your group against the elements and the city full of hostiles.
