    Far Cry series losing it?

At start I was stunned . Wow, nice different Far Cry!!!

Well soon I felt game is just to gamey. Map full of stuff, same enemy patrols etc. like in earlier games.
Lots of things to do but they dont really connect to me, I realise I just run past wenja crying for help, again. free ringtones

In some way I fell that series should go for more realistic content.
Drob stuff hoarding and animal hunting. Or at least make hunting rare and exating. No lunatic boss enemy, good adult themed story.

In a way I hope they would make FC2 with proper engine and erase some stupid stuff.
Setting was nice, African civil wars and blood diamonds sure were good thing to make a game.

What do you think? Is FC losing it?

I think it's more a case of maximising the use of a successful game format. Primal has many good points but does have similarities to 3 and 4 and I would agree it's time for a change - something altogether new. I wonder how many people would buy a revamped FC2? It's been a topic of discussion for a long while, but unfortunately I can't see time, money and resources being dedicated to resurrecting an old title. Still, there's always hope...

IMO FC Primal has something new with survival mode and permadeath option, which makes an end to the commonly used fps approach of "die-respawn-rinse-repeat" - it is simply die - end of game. This is changing how you play and makes it a lot more realistic, because your actions actually matter. There are a few things, which could make survival mode even better of course, but in principle this is a new way to approach the game and leads to a different way of playing it.

As far as hunting goes, survival mode makes changes to this as well, because you have far less animals roaming around during day light and at night there are mostly predators and more of them on the hunt and you are their desired prey. Due to the increased difficulty you need to hunt, you need food and materials to stay competitive against nature and other tribes. Carry capacity is reduced, so when I started out I was desperately looking for boars and it took me 3 ingame days to finally get what I needed to upgrade my basic gear. Your wenja people are not as productive as in the normal game as well and you have to go back to the village to access your reward stash (those are still visible in other locations, but you cannot access them there). Furthermore you do not have things like owl attacks and bombing and taming beasts is made more difficult as well. Tamed beasts are less useful, they will take damage from being overused as mounts and can die, even the legendary ones. So you will have to tame a few more throughout the game, because you will loose them.

This all makes FC Primal a lot different to former tittles. You have as well to recraft items a lot more often, because they can break easier and fire consumes them a lot faster as well. Some skills are removed or require more skill points, so progression in the game is not just more dangerous but takes as well more time to accomplish - with the permanent fear, that around the next corner you might meet your final fate or when you are still "outdoors" after night fall, you might just fall victim to predators, which do not show in hunter vision, if they are not in combat yet. You cannot just highlight them and if you overlook them, it can be your last mistake.

So I do not see where FC Primal is more of the same - it is quite different to FC3 IMO. My first character became victim to a saber tooth, which sneaked up on me and I couldn't get away - and this is game over in survival with permadeath. You might be able to imagine, how much more careful I will be with my next Takkar and my punishment for not caring early enough for shelter before night fall is that I have to do the whole tutorial section again as well. I played even with 2nd chance option, but I was too careless and entered the cold north without proper winter clothes - well, there went my bonus death, I underestimated how fast hypothermia will get me.

I thought they lost it when they made FC2.
I want another 'real' Crysis (2007) series, not another cover shooter or 2 second gimmick suit.
I want the run n gun Crysis game.

But, both FC and Crysis took half from each other, and now they are pretty indistinguishable from each other, except by name, suit, and graphics (people graphic, buildings, etc).

I think FC Primal is probably the best new concept they came out with since they split the series, even if I didnt buy the game.
I do agree that they pretty much just made a hunting game around territories though, kinda like CD Projekt Red has done with that Gwent card game (I dislike all of these, which is why I never bought FC:P and why I dont play Gwent), but I guess what is popular is what gets made.
They run a bussiness. Even though they USED to run a game company.

Dave, FC Primal is far more than just a hunting game, you should really try it, before you come to a conclusion like this.

Of course, in a hunter and gatherer age you will hunt and gather a lot, but that does not make it a hunter game. The Land of Oros is a beautiful environment in which the Wenja could eventually thrive, but they are scattered due to threats from 2 tribes located in the north and the south. Your job is basically to gather those remaining Wenja, organize and lead them to a better future and get rid of those threats from those rivaling other tribes. This is what I got so far from the story (I am just playing since friday) and this is quite a task, especially when playing in survival mode in a land, where you basically know nothing about what it has in stock for you. It is great fun to explore, especially when most of the hud clues are disabled (I use just the health/stamina bar). It is quite immersive without these hud clues and without all the hints you get in normal modes from your mini-map.

The characters of the wenja tribe, which I met so far, are quite interesting and really likable people. The environment is great and sometimes I forget, that there are predators around, which could end my life pretty quickly, if I do not pay attention. My first "Takkar" is already dead, the cold in the north took my bonus health (I am playing in 2nd chance permadeath) and a wildcat got me later on, because I did not find a proper shelter before night fall. Duh smara, I would say, I think this means "bad luck", but I am not that familiar with the wenja language yet. If you immerse yourself into the game and accept, that it is to the most part unlike other far cry games in many ways, then you will have a really great time - this game has it's very own charm to it, if you have an open mind.

I would really suggest to try it, get it later today, the black friday sale is still on.

Edit: and if you want a challenge, disable aiming aids and the reticle and do it like these guys had to do it - with experience and some luck (the mouse deadzone can be disabled for better free hand aiming). I did not find the reticle really helpful, after some time you can perfectly aim, shoot and hit without a reticle and other aids, which were not available at that time. So why use them in game.

I was actually disagreeing with the OP that the game wasnt new or inventive.
    I think it is.
Is it my type of game, or gameplay? Not remotely, not even close.
Which is why I didnt buy it.
And, which is why I said I would want another '2007's Crysis' game instead (I love first person shooters, and loved Crysis 2007 and didnt care that I couldnt run it at ultra back then, it was an awesome game. I didnt like Crysis 2 as much, and Crysis 3 is basically just a cover shooter FC3).

Hm, Far Cry is not really a first person shooter and I think it is not meant to be one - it is more a mix between an exploration game and a shooter, where you are not that goal oriented like in Crysis for example. Crysis had a sense of urgency to it and was very linear, whereas Far Cry offers a lot more freedom and you are not forced to play through it level by level, but pick up missions at your own leirsure and in the meantime you can mess around with the game world like you want and just enjoy it. This makes Far Cry different from how a pure first person shooter like Crysis is designed. I think if Ubisoft would have wanted it to be a first person shooter, they would have created it as such, but they didn't.
