    Closed Beta Feedback + Complaints

First off I'm really enjoying the game, I've pretty much explored all the available mountains and completed every challenge except for 1 or 2 I really can't find and amassed about 80,000 credits which I started spending today as I'm not sure any of this progress will carry through to open beta or when the game is released (most likely not, it's never happened in other game Betas before - like The Division). So I figured why not buy some helicopter tickets and check out some really hard to reach places etc.

I used to skateboard and have always been into snowboarding so I've probably spent most of my time snowboarding in this game. But, it's REALLY necessary to use the wingsuit and paraglide to have the best experience and reach places you've tagged with your binoculars. Do you really want to waste half an hour walking/running? nope - fast travel to a nearby place and get used to gliding!

Exploring and completing challenges is great fun - but! (here come my 2 biggest complaints)

    Tricks

Tricks seem almost meaningless in this game even though you need them to complete challenges. There's no way to tell what tricks are capable of gaining the most points and the tricks aren't even named! I don't want a huge pop-up after I land telling me a performed a 1440 etc I should have it in the bottom left underneath my score for that jump!

My main complaint with tricks is how poorly mapped the controls are when using a gamepad (I'm using a PS4 controller on PC) and at the moment there's no way to change them like you can for keyboard. Why are R2/L2 ollie AND grabs? who thought this would be a good idea? Ollie should always be X. Why is Down and Up on the L stick Roll when they should be Backflip and Frontflip? why are Backflip and Frontflip bound to the R stick when that should be used for grab selection ONLY (pressing down the R stick should be used for Tweaking). This mess of a system has you doing a very limited set of tricks - I know you all find yourself doing Backflip tailgrabs all the time or nosegrab frontflips because the flip and grab selection are on the same damn stick. To do a back flip and a different grab is VERY fiddly (holding R2 and release to ollie, hold the R stick down to back flip and then move the R stick to a different direction while holding R2 to grab - what a mess!) and every time you'll only do one backflip because you haven't held Down on the R stick for long enough to do more. It's.... truly frustrating, and I just find myself doing whatever works to get points and that's really not that much fun.

Say what you want about the slow development of F2P game SNOW - they have a really good trick system and Steep's is a bit of a mess. I really hope we'll be able to re-map our controls in the full release.

and as many people have said already - Why doesn't grinding exist in this game!? ... I'm just baffled by this. Plenty of opportunities that I was riding through an avalanche destroyed village and wanted to grind a handrail or slide along a wall. Even a reason why grinding isn't in the game would be good. Is this something we'll see? with the release just around the corner I'm not going to hold my breath.

    Camera

Now this is where the game upsets me and where I may choose not to pre-order. There are only 3 camera options when playing: Ride, First Person and Exploration.

First Person and Exploration are fine because I don't really use them but the Ride camera is a complete mess. They way the camera follows the rider seemingly at random moving from right to left whenever it wants or at ground level or above is nauseating at times (even re-spawning in the same place, with the same stance and going the same direction the camera will randomly be on the left or right whichever it decides??) and there are multiple times where you can't even see where you're going because the camera wants to do it's own thing or what it thinks is the best, if you're travelling from left to right or right to left the camera will often be facing directly at the mountain and you can't see where you're going and you can't change it unless you use the Exploration camera but holding down L1 all the time is NOT useful. It just seems to be at odds with the terrain most of the time which has caused me physical pain in the way I find myself leaning my head left or right while playing because the camera is completely unnatural and after a couple hours of playing I have a lot of pain in my shoulders and neck.

PLEASE - can we have a camera position that stays behind the rider or just off to the left or right and doesn't try to act like a camera drone being operated by a drunk person? Look at the F2P game SNOW, go look at all the other winter sports games over the last 15 years. Look at the Tony Hawk games and the EA Skate games. They all have excellent camera options (behind the rider or off center, being able to choose how close or far the camera is etc). This would also be helpful for completing challenges where you're trying to follow the best route - when the camera is doing whatever it wants it's really hard to aim yourself towards a specific place! I would love to have these options in Steep because it's actually painful for me to play after an hour or so!

If anyone else has experienced this with the camera please leave a reply - I don't want to think I'm the only one feeling this?

    Peace.

    Suggestions for improvement

I agree with the tricks thing, the controls just don't feel right and I wasn't really sure if I had complete control over the moves or it was just doing it itself.

1 thing I noticed was if I was traveling quite fast while flying in the squirrel suit, the trees and other obstacles would take a while to load up and just appear in front of me without giving me much time to move out of the way. So I face planted a few trees haha! Also i felt a bit lost to begin with, either i didn't follow the instructions properly or they weren't there but i found myself walking halfway up a mountain to get a point (which took a while) before the told me i could just use the mountain view and spawn where i wanted to go!

Apart from that I think this has the potential to be a very good game with a few adjustments. More multiplayer options could be great such as races etc. I love the graphics and the soundtrack.

Agree with all the points. Tricks need naming, listing and controls refining. Sometimes, it doesn't even register you puling a trick which is super annoying.

Huge gripes with the camera, drunk drone pilot is a great analogy at times. Need better camera angles to chose, and more of them too.

Would like proper parachutes with the wingsuit that fly similar to the paraglider. Jumped some 240 sq.ft canopies in my time, and they can glide huge distances with very little drops. Seen very experienced guys with canopies half that size get a nicer glide angle than the one in this game too. Would like to see shoulder analog buttons used properly to steer and land as in real life with left and right hand cords.

Would be nice to see some sort of HUD/ speedometer too. I know skis, snowboards etc don't have speedos, but with modern GPS devices, I'm sure it is possible in real life if desired. Would help to refine technique/ speed control too.

Hope the level up system upgrades character stats in the full release too. Would be great for customisation to player style if there were skill trees or similar. Would also be nice if equipment had stats too.

This is actually true. The thing with the tail/nose grabs really stood out, especially for serious point hunts where things have to be done quick.

    Feedback

Ubisoft, you have an amazing game on your hands here. I can't wait until it goes live and i can challenge and be challenged by other people.
That being said, there is only one thing that really grind my gears about Steep. That thing is the camera. first person is cool and all but 3rd person in what I'm all about. Your 3rd person camera needs some adjusting. During some of the downhill speed events (races and tricks), the camera points directly at my character and I cant see where I am going. Please lift it up a bit so we can see what is in front of us.

Yeah, this is most obvious when it comes to landings. The game either lands it for you - or you crash.

Characters stats etc is something i'd really like to see. Something as simple as becoming better at sticking landings would be great since the game seems to control landings for you - or you crash. It's too chaotic.
