This game will do terribly in its current state...

    Why? Because it's not fun.

Before everyone comes rushing to this game's defense, I'm actually a fan of Ubisoft and a lot of their work. I don't know much about Ubisoft Annecy other than they've worked on several recent Ubisoft games.

I'm going to be blunt because unfortunately this is how the game has made me feel.

There is so much to talk about that it would take me an hour or more to write everything that is currently wrong with this game but instead I'll just list the biggest issues that I can think of off the top of my head.

No preview of controls for gamepad. Unacceptable.

No chat. Come on. Even For Honor has a chat.

Tutorial is extremely poor and does nothing to introduce to you to tricks. Oh right, there are no tricks. All you get is a grab and left/right/up/down. This makes the game so limited it's not even funny.

    No rail grinding. Seriously?

Rocks are nothing more than barricades that act like gravel to a motorcycle. You can't do "tricks" off them and often times you'll find yourself stuck trying to get off of one.

Why do the mountains talk? Why would you ever attempt to have a story in a snowboarding game? Not only does it make no sense, but it's not fun, interesting, or thought provoking. It's a mountain. There's snow, there's trees, there's rocks. Great.

The wingsuit is god awful. Did they even play Farcry 3? Or Just Cause 3? You have to constantly hold down on the left joystick to stay in the air, and then you can never gain any more air to go back up. If you let go for even a second if you're anywhere near the ground, you instantly plummet and die. I don't care if this is realistic, it's not fun and feels awful.

Parachute is too slow, doing "tricks" is a pain in the ***. Again, not fun.

Using skis vs snowboard feels functionally identical.

Trying to play with other people is impossible. This is another case similar to GTA4 or Burnout Paradise where the game might actually be more fun if people could actually play some damn gamemodes together.

Can't switch lobbies and the most you see at a time is maybe 3 other people.

Trying to actually do "tricks" is a pain in the ***. Why do you have to let go after performing a jump?

Camera angles are awkward as hell and I constantly feel like the camera is placed in the wrong position, but you can't move it without holding L1 constantly which doesn't work.

It's not fun to watch your ragdoll because nothing happens. No broken bones like Skate 3 or Sniper Elite V2, no funny screaming, no trying to grab onto anything like Euphoria.

Not even going to talk about the G system. I don't think it's good but I don't think it's awful. It just makes the game even more limited than it already is because you can't do anything insane.

The music is actually pretty good. So far it's the only real positive I can think of next to the animations/graphics. I just heard a birthday massacre song so double points for music.

The saddest part of all of this I was interested in this game after seeing the trailer which didn't even look that hyped up, yet does not represent actual day to day gameplay at all. Unless you have 3 other friends to play with (hint: you won't) then you're stuck with pubs who you can't talk to without using a mic, and even then good luck. I

I don't think this game is fixable. It would require adding completely new mechanics and ideas, and because the game is already in beta this will never happen. I played SNOW which is a f2p game for about 2 hours and had more fun with that than any of the time I've spent with STEEP. Not going to say one or the other is better because imo they're both pretty poor.

Sure the animations are good like all Ubisoft games and for the most part the presentation is pretty good, but there is NOTHING TO DO. Snowboard down one mountain, ski down another mountain. Do a few spins and backflips while holding your board or skis. Use your wingsuit or parachute and fly down the mountain.

This game has no substance, and a $60 asking price is ludicrous when taking this into account. I'm sorry but it is.

This is my opinion and if anything I said is incorrect I don't blame myself I blame the game for being so opaque as I spent a few hours trying to figure things out.

Wow, I totally disagree with almost everything you just said, except for the camera angle part.
After reading your review I strongly get the idea that you just didn't play it long enough.
For example the trick tutorial you complain about.. once you get to the first snowpark in the game you'll get a tutorial on how to do tricks.
I guess this game just isn't for you as you give up on it so quickly.

It has been a really long time since I was this excited about a new game and I can't wait until it's finally the 2nd of December!

This is all 100% spot on. Couldn't have said it better myself. I have a feeling this person works for UBI ^ haha.

CANNOT disagree any more XD the game was supposed to be 80% realistic... You seem to want SSX 2016 XD ALSOOOO come on.. its on closed beta, 1 month ago during closed alpha they had 50% less content then now.. so id imagine next open beta we will have more and for launch even more SOOOO...

50% less content? Are you that dense? The game is coming out December 2nd. And how do you have 50% less content when the content you already have is minuscule?

Also where the hell does it say this game is supposed to be 80% realistic, and how does that benefit the game? You're right, I would rather be playing SSX 2016. Almost everyone here would rather be playing SSX 2016.

When will you kids learn that beta = final game content.

I am 43, was a ski instructor and did a lot of freeriding myself, including front flipping 50 foot cliffs. I am having fun tremendously and there are still plenty of bugs, but I have to disagree on many of your points:

There is a great tutorial which explains the basics. left, right, the shoulder buttons.... It's not rocket science...

No tricks??? I am pulling of triple rotations, 14's corks with multiple grabs, triple flips etc...

It's a freeride / backcountry game. Rails belong in the park!

Yes, that's the nature of rocks! You need to kick off on snow! Rocks of course break you to zero. This is a SNOWsports game and not FMX or BMX!

I like that kind of. Beleive me, I lived years in the mountains as a professional skier and there are so much exciting stories I experienced.

The steering could use some more fine tuning, but it should be a bit realistic and not like in Far Cry. After all, maybe you know now why Wingsuit has quite a death rate! What would be the fun if you manage to fly through that hole in the first or second attempt? It took Jeb Corliss a year of preparation to fly through the Tianmen Gate ;-)

It's also not my favorite part of the game. Havent tried the tricks yet. I currently stick to the skiing and Wingsuit part.

No, it's great and intuitive. You have to let go to conclude the movements of the jump. OItherwise you crash. It's like in real life!!!!

The First person mode is too nervous and literally unplayable at the moment. Sometimes the performer is in the way and you cant really see the jump. Some improvement there would be great. My camera angels are most of the time good and solid.

Yes, a bone crash meter would be awesome....

I am alos still figuring out the benefits of the G system.

The music is so far the weakest point in the game. Where is all the Punk Rock, Reggae and Hip Hop??? I wanna hear the stuff from the Matschtick and TGR movies.

Well, your opinion. I am having a lot of fun and find it highly addictable, but that might be because I AM actually a freerider. However, here some improvement suggestions from my side:

    - Game crashes quite often. I living in China (bad internet connection) and am streaming to my PC. That might add to it, but please make those servers work smooth! However, I had now 5 crashes in 1 hour
    - Ego perspective needs a lot of improvement!
    - Where are the avalanches?
    - Sometimes can get cushgt between the rocks.
    - Sometimes the camera is very nervous when starting a new challenge
    - I hope you will implement helicopters
    - Why not a climbing part to access hidden drop off's and secrets later in the game?
    - Bone crush meter!
    - Sometimes I jumpt to a starting point and the challenge wont start (mainly the mountain stories)
    - Please improve the switch from regular to fakie. Doing it with a button switch would be much more fun and easy
    - I am missing a Pause button ot pause the run without restarting the challenge. Did I miss something?
    - How about a more dynamic weather system. E.g. with heavy snow and fog where only in the trees visibility is reasonable?

I am sure there will be more to add. Now back to the game! ;-)

Since the BETA presently CTD (crashes to desktop) after 10-15 minutes, how can one play it any longer?

Since one has to re-launch the game every 12 minutes, the least they could do is make the opening "warnings on snow" screen skippable after the 5th time?
Never actually needed to find a way to exit the game, since it does this automatically. Is this a feature?

    Some things need to change

I love the premise of the game and what your trying to do but the controls are whacked.your x button should be your jump and u need a grind button which should be triangle.I understand your u need to go through things to unlock new races but u should be able to free ride anywhere as well as do the races.if you change those controls a bit it will be great.r2 not the proper button in a snowboard(skiing game)

Sadly, I agree 100% with what you said

It's boring and feels sluggish. Going at insane speed and sometimes flying is really cool.

Wingsuit : Always left sitck on back position, this is not what I imagined when I saw the trailer.

    Ski : Same as snowbaord

    Snowboard : Same as Ski

Paraglide : Although the scenery is nice, it's boring and not fast enough

SSX 2016?! Are you on drugs? They want the game to be somewhat realistic. I would rather have Amped 2016 than SSX 2016 any day of the week.

Also, I've heard several people including you complain about no being able to ride over rocks. Really now? Maybe you should go back and reexamine your line and find a way down the face that doesn't involve going straight over rock. Does Travis Rice aim for the rocks when he works out the best line down an AK cliff face. No he doesn't.
