Something is done, there are automatic measures in place that catch some of it and the forum team spend quite a bit of time manually deleting the rest.
The only automatic method that will catch ALL spam is unfortunately to turn of public posting altogether. The current measures have been set to catch as large a percentage as possible of the spam without unduly inconveniencing legitimate posters with Captcha and similar gimmicks to try to weed out spam bots. Unfortunately, quite a large proportion of the spam seems to be posted by real human sweat-shop workers and methods like Captcha are not very effective at cutting them down.
