Whats everyones thoughts on parrying? On one side, i like it. Its a cool idea. However, i do feel it takes away from the game slightly. I feel it should be more about blocking and dodging than parrying. Most fights you just end up repeatedly parrying with someone until one of you grab the other into an unblockable attack until someone dies. Thats pretty lame. I almost feel like if it was adjusted, the game would be much more fast paced. If it was removed altogether or even reserved solely for heavy attacks, i think we would see a quality of life increase for all characters. Everyone is sick of fighting someone just to have them parry, grab, then do an unblockable overhead.
I always imagined For Honor to be a game where its more about your own technique and the way you block and maneuver around your enemy. Attacking fiercely from different angles while maintaining an iron defense from your enemies attacks in a flurry of action. But unfortunately, thats not what it turned out to be. I still love it. But mechanics such as the parry system and constant grabbing make the game feel slow and tedious at times. I cant help but want to just swing at someone relentlessly and have them do the same to me without having to worry about a stupid grab or a pushback. Nobody wants to attack someone just to be parried and then to parry their next incoming attack and rinse and repeat. That just cuts the action short and cutting action short in a game like this is a real tragedy. I perform very well in this game so when someone fights me like that i cant help but rage inside and think.... HAVE SOME HONOR! FIGHT ME DAMNIT!
The perfect example of the issue with the parry system is the conqueror bot. We have all faced him. He has a truly iron defense. One to be admired as a matter of fact. However, to be honest, hes the most boring person to fight. He parries literally every attack and just interrupts any kind of rush or momentum you have... And then he grabs you! over and over. What a jerk! Unfortunately, thats what a healthy amount of the player base now does. They dont want to attack. They would rather just parry you and grab you so they can throw you off a ledge or hit you with an unblockable attack because thats what gets you wins in this game. It doesnt matter how good at attacking and counter attacking you are if its all for nothing when some ****** keeps grabbing you and throwing you into a wall. I dont wanna play that! I dont really think many others want to either from looking at these forums. But hey, im just one man and this is just one mans opinion. And my opinion is that i think they should remove it or rethink it entirely and maybe make it so you can only parry heavy attacks.
Whats your opinion?
I believe the combat system and parries are good as it as now. It calls for careful, calculated combat at the higher echelons of gameplay.
What you call a "flurry of action" is usually the spam-fest of incautious attacks that lower-level players tend to throw out. This fast-paced, gripping faux-tactic can make the game fun, but it's not the only way that players enjoy the game. Higher-level players utilize feints and combos that may look slow and dull to you at first, but this tip-toeing mind game they have requires even better reaction times and planning than just switching your guard around for rock-paper-scissor angles.
As for countering guard breaking- I know you've probably heard this a lot-, you simply have to play the game enough to develop your reaction time and, probably more importantly, your knowledge/anticipation of when an opponent will try a guard break, especially near environmental hazards.
If your opponent and you are parrying every single of each other's strikes, you both most likely don't know how to use feints. It takes a lot of skill to use them effectively. I think once you get another chance to play For Honor more extensively, you'll be able to improve your skill level and see an entirely different way to play then what you are used to as of now.

I enjoyed the Alpha and will admit my skills are probably not close to the level of yours. I will say parrying the Orochi was a challenge for me when I was the Knight and he would beat to the punch constantly when we both would perform a light attack. Maybe the fighting styles were similar and that caused it along with my lack of ability but it was not an easy time...fun nonetheless. I'm ready for a 1K more deaths with a few more tweaks.

Parries allow a guaranteed hit, no?
My impression of the parries is basically echoing what the more experient players are saying: they are very OP, easy to do and with a huge reward.
